I want to turn off read receipts in apple mail.

I found instructions on how to turn on read receipts and followed them and they worked. Now I want to turn them off, but can't. The site that gave me the commands to turn them on says that to turn them off I go to the terminal and enter this string:

defaults delete com.apple.mail UserHeaders

However, when I do that, I get this message:

Domain (com.apple.mail) not found.

Defaults have not been changed.

I am running Mojave 10.14.1

The instructions are from October of 2018. Does anyone have any more current instruction?

By distribution notices do you mean read receipts? If so, then yes.

defaults read -app Mail got me exactly the same response as did defaults read com.apple.mail

AND as of this afternoon all of my Smart mailboxes are empty. I closed Mail and reopened it, with no effect. I used Mailbox > Rebuild but it didn't change anything. Next I deleted one of the smart mailboxes and re-created it. It remains empty.
