how to clear a pop up blocker when opening a gmail message is safari 12

I am running Safari 12.0.1 and High Sierra 10.13.6

I am working from home while I recover from an injury. I often need to open a gmail message in its own window so I can edit it over a bit of time and not forget to send it before I shut down. At work, we have to use Firefox for a program we run. When I click on the shift key and the pop out icon, the gmail window opens into a separate window. When I try it here at home, I get an error message User uploaded file

I've gone into Safari's preferences/websites/ Pop up windows and chosen allow for gmail but nothing changes. I keep getting the error message. I have restarted Safari to see if it needs that to take effect but no go.

I've searched and it seems this was an ussue back in Safari 11 with many posts but then the answers stopped with no solution. Can anyone help me fix this? I rely on this tool that I've used before in Safari and is not working in Safari 12.

Thank you for any help you can give me.

Michelle

You are welcome.

Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. Please post back on whether or not this worked. Also try the Safe Mode. Please post back on whether or not this worked.

Isolating an issue by using another user account

Safe Mode - About

If it works in the Safe Mode, try running this program when booted normally and then copy and paste the output in a reply. The program was created by Etresoft, a frequent contributor. Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read. Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy to Clipboard” and then paste into a reply. This will show what is running on your computer. No personal information is shown.

Hi Eric,

I tried opening a reply window in gmail, to pop out using the shift key and it continues to give me the Grr error message I included with my original post above.

I had a test account set up so I logged out of my admin account and logged in with the test account, opened Safari, logged into gmail and tried to pop out a message window with the shift key and got the Grrr error message in this account too.

I logged back into my Admin Account and created a brand new account. I logged into gmail via safari, opened a message and clicked on shift and the arrow icon in the top right of the window to open the message in its own window and, yet again I got the Grrr message for the pop up blocker.

I also tried the safe load in Safari and it gave me the Grrr error message too.

I decided to try it in Chrome and it worked just fine and I tried it in Firefox and it worked just fine too. So it would seem to be an issue with Safari.

Your thoughts?

Thanks,

Michelle

Thanks for these links Eric, I've saved them for future needs. I can see times when this viewing option would be such a benefit!

I will reply to Allan's post for follow up because the reader view does not work in gmail and that is the program that is giving me the issue of not allowing the window to pop up. And that is what he replied to with the reader view suggestion.

Thank you again Eric,

Michelle

Hi Allan,

I looked into the reader view with some searching and a helpful post here by Eric Root. Unfortunately, from what I can tell, the reader view only appears to work on webpages sharing an article. And it is not an option for gmail, which is where I am having the issue of not being able to open the message in a separate window because of a strange block from Safari thinking the page does not allow pup ups.

Were you suggesting another way that the reader view might help me with the gmail window blockage?

Thank you,

Michelle

Hello Allan,

The link you sent is one I found and the steps it describes are the ones I list in my post that I have taken. And, when I do this and then try and pop out the email, the same error message comes up so those steps are not working. And that is what I read was happening a year ago when a thread for this topic was started and no solution came from it.

Can you share what reader mode is and/or how I access it?

Thank you for the suggestions,

Michelle
