Mouse and keyboard keep disconnecting

Ever since I installed MacOS Mojave (now 10.14.1) I have been having trouble connecting the Apple mouse and keyboard. Both had always been working fine (over a year).

Now they don't connect or lose connection when the mac wakes up. Sometimes they reconnect after a few minutes.

I have tried all the obvious thing like deleting the bluetooth list in Library/Preferences, but the problem hasn't gone away.

Sometimes it works, then the connectivity fails again.

A reply to a previous post about this suggested to restart the SMC, which I did and which solved the problem at the time. (the post was then marked as solved so I have to re-start the thread). However, it happened again today, so the SMC restart didn't seem to have been a permanent fix.

Is there anything else that can be done?

Hi everyone ..... HAVE SOLUTION ...... most likely.

There is another forum on here, somewhere that I ran across.

The problem is the Android File Transfer app ..... everyone that was having the bluetooth disconnecting, etc. just deleted this app and everything went back to normal, and working .... including me.

I restarted after deleting just to make sure, but I've been problem free for over a week now ..... others MUCH longer!!!

Problems persists. Disconnects still occurring. Interestingly, the corded mouse's pointer still works, the mouse clicks don't.

Two lines of thought -

  1. Does it seem to happen when Time Machine (in my case through the USB3 to an external Seagate HD) is active? A conflict there?
  2. Replacing bluetooth keyboard/mouse with a corded keyboard and mouse - does this eliminate the non-response issue?

If it is the latter, then this will give a strong pointer to where the problem lies.

I'm working with a dedicated Apple Support person to isolate/analyse and hopefully fix the problem.

At the moment I am running the Mac in Safe Mode and there have been no issues. We tried running a test Administrator and that also worked. Things seem to go pear shaped when I sign in under my normal profile and the disconnects start up again.

I'm not a tech, but, this would seem to give clue where the Apple people should be looking for the conflicts that cause the disconnections to occur, i.e. my profile and what that runs in the background compared to running safe mode and what doesn't run in the background.

The support person I am working with has been very helpful and is quite committed to working out what is happening and why. He is a good representative of the organisation.

I do return to my initial non-solution/solution. I am quite happy for Mr&Mrs Apple to call their two errant children (Magic Keyboard and Magic Mouse) home and to send me a corded keyboard and mouse which, I do believe, will stop my problems. I know that it is not an elegant solution, but if it works and stops the annoyance I'll be happy while Apple sorts things out and sends out a patch/update to fix the issue.

Hi

I do not know if this will help but it is worth bearing in mind.

I had a problem where I could not pair mouse or keyboard to 2nd mac.

It was due to another mac in home which these items were originally paired to still having bluetooth turned on, once I turned bluetooth off of 1st mac they would pair to 2nd mac.

Bluetooth will travel through walls and floors it seems.

Same problem here, since Mojave, as described. Mac restart helps always, also sometimes Bluetooth off and then on again. Mouse and keyboard is disconnected. Had I no USB mouse I would be completely lost every time. This way I at least can off/on Bluetooth.

Already with earlier OS I had Bluetooth problems, but different. Paired devices did not connect, had to on/off devices, on/off Mac, whatever, terrible. But this now is worse. I type and realize after whatever time that nothing happens on the screen.

We own the most expensive hardware and it doesn't work!

Apple seems not only to have iPhone sales problems.

I've heard nothing - not a sausage!

In the meantime, we have continued on with hitting Restart when we have finished our sessions and have had no connection problems when we log back on. This seems at variance to the posting by Beoze because, if it was a hardware problem caused by interference, then why does the Restart strategy seem to eliminate the disconnects? That is, unless the restart clears a hardware setting or something. Perhaps someone more knowledgeable than me can shed some light on this? Any thoughts Beoze?

Hi all sadly I have had this problem occurring to my 4k 27inch retina IMAC from 2015 im running high sierra 10.13.06 and cant say for certain but has started to happen since either the most recent or prior update, nothing to do with interference as ive used the mac in 3 places and all different things and sometimes nothing near and still get this problem. Sometimes the mac is asleep or at least locked and pressing the keyboard or mouse usually bring up the login screen, however when it fails it doesn't so the only thing that can be done is a hard reset. However today it has happened with the screen still on and MAC obviously functioning I can see all the windows fetching data and emails coming in with sound etc, but keyboard and mouse disconnected, cannot reconnect them by switch on and off. I do not want to do a full reset just to fix a MAC and Apple bug in an upgrade as its a days work minimum. Today I tried plugging in the BT keyboard and that brings the keyboard back, then I tried a USB mouse and voila the mouse is back , I switch off BT with the USB mouse and then switch BT back on and voila BT mouse works. Keyboard still does not work by BT only with Cable. good grief , so this is MAC BT hardware not compatible with recent software upgrades right - period !!!!??? I have stopped upgrading to new releases like Mojave for this reason and several issues over 10 years of upgrade failures. However High Sierra has been relatively stable for at least a year. So Apple whats the change , can you fix it or tell us when it will be fixed ? I only use USB ports for charging and connecting a phone, oh and 1 Brother printer . I don't connect anything other than the BT keyboard and Mouse to the mac via BT. If I reboot it works sometimes no issues for a day and sometimes an issue at first sleep. It also occurs when another account (daughter) logs into my MAC and I try and login again, more often or not the KB and Mouse dont work. I have 16GB RAM i7 processor so how can this be resources . Just to help people this is fixed with USB mouse and Keyboard but of course we only have 4 USB ports !! AND whats the point in cables when we have wireless that worked in 2015,16,17,18

after it seems more and more clear, that apple changed the bluetooth driver from normal to low power in the move from High Sierra to Mojave and that apples own hardware can not cope with this low power requirement, I have contacted Support again. unfortunately, even with all the information in this thread supplied to them, One cannot move up the ranks to the engineers level before you have at least repeated all the steps mentioned already in this thread and have done a clean install of Mojave again.... tiring!

it became also clear, that this issue is not yet know to support, because there is still no solution and even senior support has no clue. also, even having a rather new mac (1 year) does not help, because keyboard and mouse can still be older...

stay High Sierra if you can!

@jmerrit1963

sorry to make you tired with this discussion.

But what was your value added input again in your posting?

I for my side think, that whilst it takes up a lengthy time, in this discussion we do narrow it down a little. it does appear now, that the problem is caused with the introduction of the low power bluetooth driver in Mojave. obviously, apple’s own keyboard and mouse can not cope with this and in High Sierra, this bluetooth driver was different.

This is indeed a bug and needs to be solved and not worked around by letting the users buy new hardware..

unfortunately, Apple is not working on this and getting it to the attention of the bug fix engineers is nearly impossible. but please bring it to the attention of Apple support instead of complaining here in the discussion. that would help

Bluetooth gets scrambled easily. For example, if I leave the lid open on my DVD player, the mouse gets twitchy and restarts over and over. Closing the lid fixes the problem.

Now, the new Mac Mini has a much worse problem. The USB and the Bluetooth appear to be using the same power supply. Drawing current off the USB causes the Bluetooth chip to reset over and over. This is very noticeable if the USB device is a hard drive.
