My MacBook Pro will not power up and all I get is a grey screen and a flashing file symbol

My MacBook Pro will not power up and all I get is a grey screen and a flashing file symbol. I have repeatedly depowered it and powered it up again, but it will not start up. All I get is the image below ok the grey screen.

A folder with a question mark means that the selected startup disk isn't available or doesn't contain a Mac operating system. Learn how to resolve a flashing question mark.
