Help UPDATE my 2008 Macbook Pro WiFi Card Firmware

The SPECS

Card Type: AirPort Extreme (0x14E4, 0x8C)

Firmware Version: Broadcom BCM43xx 1.0 (5.10.131.39.16)

This is an old Mac 15" Macbook Pro 2008 that will only upgrade as high as El Capitan. The problem is that means I can no longer update the firmware to my WIFI card.

So my question(s) is this

Can I open up my laptop and replace the WIFI card with one that with work with my network and get me at least to 100 MBs

OR

Can I somehow get a firmware update to boost the capabilities to work with my ac router?

Any help or guidance very much appreciated
