How to remove annoying "Upgrade to macOS Mojave" messages

Periodically I get a notification in the upper right corner of my computer screen requesting me to Install "macOS Mojave". I don't want to install Mojave and I worry I'll accidentally click the install button. I've tried removing these messages by going into System Preferences then the App Store and unchecking the following

  1. Download newly available updates in the background
  2. Install app updates
  3. Install macOS

But, a month later I still get the "Upgrade to macOS Mojave" with no option to stop the messages - just Install or Details.

Perhaps there's something already installed? I was getting these messages prior to initiating the above procedure.

Any ideas?

Hiding Mac App Store updates

Step 1: Open the Mac App Store and click the Updates tab.

Step 2: Right click on the update(s) that you wish to hide, and click Hide Update.

The Mojave update does NOT exist in the Updates tab. There is nothing there to hide when we get those notifications. In fact the App Store has no way of stopping this notification when it gets to this point.

What is happening is that the installer is automatically downloading - by what trigger I don't know - and once downloaded we get the Upgrade notification with only "Install" or "Details" as if we were already interested and just need to follow through. Apple should be ashamed of themselves for this. Has the industry learned nothing from the Windows 10 upgrade fiasco that ****** off 3/4 of the world?

Also solving problems by going to the command prompt is an insult to the memory of Steve Jobs and everyone he captured by designing Macs in the first place. We are end users not developers, and this is Mac not DOS.

I found that if I do a search for "Mojave" it will find the "Install Mojave" file probably in the Applications folder. I didn't put it there, not even accidentally. Something downloaded it AUTOMATICALLY. But I click it and throw it in the trash and empty my trash and the notifications stop for a time.

But I wish I knew what is causing it to download without my permission.

PS: I have gone into System Preferences > App Store and unchecked "Install macOS updates" to see if that makes a difference. This notification is an UPGRADE not an UPDATE so nothing in these settings should be triggering a download of the Installer for Mojave, unless they changed their rules, and if they have they get no love from me. But my feeling is that one of the macOS updates or system data files brought with it a change of business rules that gives them permission to automatically download the installer and then trigger the notification that offers no way of stopping. If it downloads again I'll try unchecking more of these. BTW: In my case it is also not "Automatically download apps purchased on other Mac computers" because that only impacts other computers signed into my apple ID and there are no accidental downloads on those computers either.

All-in-one Command to Disable “Upgrade to MacOS Mojave” Notifications:

If you’re a savvy command line user you can also string the commands together like so, this will move the OSXNotification.bundle into the user Documents folder, and then ignore the Mac OS installer notifications:

sudo mv /Library/Bundles/OSXNotification.bundle ~/Documents/ && softwareupdate --ignore macOSInstallerNotification_GM

Because the command uses sudo, you will need to authenticate with admin/root to issue that command properly. Recall that improper command line syntax can lead to unexpected results, thus it’s only appropriate for advanced users to use the command line.
