I have the exact same problem. My callers complain that I sound like I am under water. The problem gets worse as the call progresses until they can't stand it and hang up. I hate this XR - I wish I'd never bought it. Its a dog.
My XR microphone worked for phonecalls and voice memos. But not for taking videos as there would be a lot of hiss and patchy underwater-like sound recording with silences and gaps.
After doing all the recommended suggestions including toggling of various sound options and even doing a reset that caused the loss of all my preset wifi passwords and customised settings, I finally solved the problem.
There is actually a 3rd microphone near the rear-facing camera that was covered by the rear phone protector. Cutting off a corner of it to unblock the microphone hole did the trick. All that unnecessary sweat wasted. Hopefully this helps for some of you.
Yes, I am on my second XR model. Then thought it was the carrier and changed today from Verizon to AT&T. No difference. I intend to show an Apple tech this discussion and see what he or she suggests. It's ridiculous that callers tell me my voice is muffled or cuts out if I just slightly move the phone. Never had this problem with iPhone 6.
I have the same problem with sound on phone calls, I hear them fine, but they say at times it sounds like I’m under water or walked away from the phone. Apple replaced the phone, the replacement is doing the same thing.
I think we have established in this discussion it is not a case ("try talking on the phone with the cover closed"). No one at the Apple Store I visited multiple times had ever heard of the issue. My gut instinct is that people who are experiencing this think it is their carrier's fault, therefore they never bother to mention it to Apple.
Didn't help with my XR. Noise cancellation is off (to be clear, that's the switch showing WHITE). People still complain about the microphone cutting out/muffled sounding occasionally. And I am running iOS 12.4.
I had my phone replaced. Same issue still continues.
Sadly I am wondering too about why I have stuck with Apple especially when the primary purpose of the device (a telephone), doesn't work particularly well.
Apple will never admit any wrong doings... or mistakes. So... Caveat emptor.
I 100% agree, I’m on my 3rd phone, still with same issue and no resolve. I have been on this case for 7-8 months. They tried to record a few profiles on the phone and send them to Apple two times, months apart, but the files are too big to send and never go thru. Such a runaround... they could have bought me 5 new IPhones with the labor of Apple employees and my time on this!
try putting LTE to data only....it fixed my problem.
My Hands-free microphone is very quiet when I am talking to people they can barely hear me on my iPhone XR
The problem happened with me without a case on, and not covering the back microphone whatsoever. It is something else.
I am having issues with people hearing me when I make a phone call
Are you referring to the cell phone case?
Yes I am. As I had the same problem.

(yes all).
Sorry to to rain on your parade, but my XR does not exhibit this problem. So another theory shot to heck.
Noise cancellation doesn’t work for me either.
iPhone XR - microphone issue ?
