Photos missing (?)

I sort my pictures into albums, within folders. When I open the folder, the album shows the correct # of pictures in the album, but when I open the actual album, the number of pictures is significantly lower. This started happening about a month ago.

FYI...the pictures are in the main "photos" section still.

Are my pictures missing, or is there some sort of display setting?

You may have added a filter to the album. Do you have macOS 10.14 Mojave installed?

In Mojave you have a filter in the upper right corner of the viwer, where you can select to show all photos or only selected photos. Click the "Showing only" in the upper right corner to see the filter rules, that are currently checked.

For example:

User uploaded file

Here the the "Showing" filter has been set to show only the favorite videos.
