Why wont GIFs work on ipod nano?

i can get pictures to work and show on the ipod. what i cant get to work is GIFs. i put the GIF in the same folder as the pictures and all it shows up as is a picture not a GIF on the ipod. Why is that and how do i get it so GIFs work? it says all over that apple site that GIF work on the nano.
