The case of the; Missing Printer Driver

It started with me wanting to speed up my apple works app.Thru the Forum I saved some notes for mac maintenance to perform periodically.I did "Repair Permitions",this didn't do much, so I did "Repairing the hard disk" putting in the OS 10 install CD #1(10.3.2, which I did't realize at the time). It seemed to go OK as I followed the prompts, BUT it never said "done" so after 30 minutes nothing was happening so I closed out the program.When my original screen came back I noticed that I tunes was missing, THEN I noticed that CD#1 was 10.3.2 so I updated my software back to 10.3.9 & iTunes came back. THEN I noticed.I couldn't PRINT so I downloaded from "Epson" web the latest driver for my CX6400 & it said it downloaded OK. I cannot find the printer in the "printer list", I click "ADD" & it shows "Stylus CX6400" DRIVER NOT installed
even tho the "installer" said it was successful. Any Ideas ????

e² ::Thank you so much for your info on the install disks. ( I am still leary to reinstall,but I may get over it). I found the epson CD that I got with the system 3 Yrs ago. I had problems getting the printer to work then . they told me the CD wasn't updated for Panther OS 10.
They told me what to do to get the system to work then (but of course I forgot after 3Yrs).
I Emailed their support site this morning asking for updates & a new updated CD. I hope they can help me out.

Hi Ali;;; I followed your instructions (your post on3-3-07 12:34PM) that you gave to Emmajean (post 3-3-07 9:25 AM). I thought it would work for me,but alais it didn't.
I think that since my Printer is a CX6400 could be a problem. I didn't see folder 11517.sea.hqx ; to unzip OR 11517 to expand.
My folders 10881 & an icon 10881 When I Double click on one of these it sets up the VICE Icon that I double click on to install. This time the prompt said it was already installed even tho in the end it said it wasn't. I don't know about zipping & expanding. I had hi hopes , but such is life.
I have downloaded this Driver about 12 times. It doesn't matter does it? I mean it will only install once. I was wondering if I may be clogging up the computer somewhere.

Warren,

"This time the prompt said it was already installed..."
Then you must not have successfully uninstalled.

Here are the instructions for your CX6400.

* Download the most current driver from Epson Stylus CX6400, Drivers & Downloads.
Printer Driver v1.7bA
That seems to be the only appropriate one, although it is not for Panther 10.3.x.

* Before moving the folder & files listed below, to a Temporary Epson Trash Folder, that you should create on the Desktop, open Printer Setup Utility, and delete the CX6400.
* Quit Printer Setup Utility

* Move the files (Posted in CAPITALIZED Italics), to the newly created Temporary Epson Trash Folder

HD > Applications >
EPSON PRINTER UTILITY (Alias)

HD > Users > Your Home > Library > Preferences >
COM.EPSON.IJPRINTER.UTILITY.PLIST
COM.APPLE.PRINT.CUSTOMPRESETS.PLIST
COM.APPLE.PRINT.PRINTCENTER.PLIST
COM.APPLE.PRINT.PRINTERPROXY.INTERNAL_MODEM.PLIST
COM.APPLE.PRINT.PRINTINGPREFS.PLIST

HD > Library > Printers >
EPSON (Folder) Only move this folder if you have no other
Epson products

I also had a Epson OS X booklet.pdf, that I had saved in my Documents folder. You will get a new one. After the installation, I replaced it. You may not have saved your original one. It's no big deal, there's really not much in it, In fact I don't remember the last time I opened it!

* Quit ALL running Applications

* Repair Permissions using Disk Utility in the Utilities folder

* Dig out your Epson CX6400 Start Here instruction quick sheet, for reference
* Unplug the USB cable from the Mac & then from the CX6400
* Re-attach the USB cable to the CX6400 & then to the Mac
* Turn on your CX6400
* Double click on: epson10881.sea.hqx to unzip
* Double click on: epson10881.sea to expand
* Follow the prompts & instructions
* When the Vise installer opens in a window, double click it to start the install
* When the installation is complete, turn off the printer & restart your Mac.
* Repair Permisions again
* Turn on the CX6400
* Open Printer Setup Utility
* You have no printers available will appear. Click Add
* Select Epson USB in the contextual menu
* Click on Stylus CX6400 to highlight
* Add Page Setup: select All, from the contextual menu
* Click Add
* Quit Printer Setup Utility

The images below, that are left on the Desktop, can be trashed, unless you prefer to keep the installer.

epson10881.sea.hqx
epson10881.sea
CX6400Series_v1.7bA.dmg (I'm not sure what the exact name of this will be, but it will be something like that.)

Hi Ali----I downloaded & installed the Driver. It said both were succesful. Then I REstarted
Opened the Printer setup utility; & this is what it said :
YOU HAVE NO PRINTERS AVAILABLE
Would you like to add to your list of Printers now ? Click on ADD which I did. This showed up ;( ?Stylus CX6400 Driver not installed) SOOO I stopped
I didn't think the process would work from this starting point ???????

I heard from Epson this morning, They said the 1.7bA is the correct
driver for my system. They gave me directions for a COMPLETE removal & reinstall of the printer driver files. Which I did to no avail again. Do you think that a reinstall of my system using CD1 & CD2 might solve this. As I have said I am reluctant to do this since I remember reading horror stories of people having problens after they have done it. An aside question--How do you type BOLD letters Here??? I click for bold=bb I don't know what this means. I click for underline = ???cccc I must be missing more than I thought

Hello e² I just thought you would like to know, I solved my problem. I did a reinstall with archive & all. That went OK after a few updates etc. But it didn't solve the printer problem. I was ready to call a repair specialist.
Then I noticed in the "Print/ Fax window" of the "system Preferences", the box-- "Select printer in Print Dialog" I couldn't do it, inside the box it said use LAST printer. Then it dawned on me. There was no "Last Printer" , but I couldn't type in the box. SOOOO by stroke of genius .In the "Printers List" ,that would sometimes come up "Rendezvous" Which I would change to "USB"
(Because I was using a USB cable).BUUUTTT I never noticed down on the pop up list "EPSON USB" I clicked on it & BINGO!!!! Back in business. Can you believe it. When something takes this long to solve 9 times out of 10 it is something easy or stupid.This case was both.Thanks so much for your help.

use last printer

Eureka Warren!

I think in My Previous Post, I advised that.

"* Turn on the CX6400
* Open Printer Setup Utility
* You have no printers available will appear. Click Add
* Select Epson USB in the contextual menu
* Click on Stylus CX6400 to highlight
* Add Page Setup: select All, from the contextual menu
* Click Add
* Quit Printer Setup Utility"

Congratulations!

Mr W: Glad to hear that. It seemed that between what Ali &/or what I had suggested the answer was there to be found. Unfortunately we can't jump through cyberspace to click the right button. It had to be found by you; in System Preferences. It seemed that perhaps the clean re-install gave the computer what might have been missing before? Seemed like too many unconnected dots were confusing the picture??? Just do the "Software Update" a few times because as you install the updates that makes other updates available, obviously only install the stuff you want. The Daylight Savings stuff is what is coming up as most relevant. Take Care.

Ali That is SO funny, Talk about not seeing the tree thru the forest. I only concentrated on USB & ignored Epson. How could I do that??? Now I know I am doing something stupid here . I would like to be able to print in "BOLD".
For some reason when i click on the Icons I get this without typing or
or What am I doing wrong???? Thanks I won't bug you again

Ali:

While replying to Warren P about his printer issues I saw that you are running a split partition in one of your computers. I have an Imac G4 with 10.1.5/9.22 that perhaps one day I'd like to bring up to 10.3.9, but keeping the OS 9 side intact. Is that a GUI type exercise or did it take a special program? I haven't look at Disc Util in my iMac to see how that might be done, nor have I searched Apple Database . . .. Seeing your hardware info just piqued my curiosity. Any links to info about how to do what you did?? Thanks.
