Compatible Video Formats...

I myself don't have a Mac, so I can't check this for myself at the moment.

I have a project to do where various people will be sending video clips to then be put together with iMovie. I'm not sure which formats work in the program. I received one .avi file so far but files that are too big to attach in an email I'm trying to find a way to get at them. So we were going to try Google Video. You can download those videos two ways...one saves as a .gvp and the other a mpg4. Will this work? If not, do you have any suggestions?

Thank you so much!

Okay, will do.

Do the parents have to have XP in order to get the Movie Maker download?

What should they do if they really cannot figure out how to do this, even with step-by-step instructions? Whats your second pick? (I know it is pretty simple, but you never know!) All computers don't have CD burners either, do they? (We don't know how ancient some computers may be) I may also have Non-US contributors and it seems silly to send a piece of mail with just a single disc all the way from Australia or Romania.

If they do not go through the Movie Maker steps, can't it still be put onto a CD? What does this process do? The one CD that is already in the mail, I have no idea if they went through Movie Maker or anything before saving it. How do I salvage that without having them do it all over again?

If I do have any Mac users - which I think I do - will they be able to just go ahead and burn to a CD or do they have to do something too?

I'm trying to think of all the situations that might occur...if you think of anything else just tack it on.

You've really been so much help. I would probably be frustrated with me by now. Thank you!

Kids Cancer Corner,

It appears you volunteered (or got volunteered), for a huge, somewhat technical task, that you have little or no experience in. You're going to receive videos delivered different ways, in several formats. WoW!!!!

I understand that the only equipment you're working with are a Mac and a PC. But we have to keep things kinda focused on issues specific to iMovie.-:)

As I mentioned earlier If contributors are able to create a video file for email, they're already familiar with some type of video editing application. Most of these applications/programs allow you to save the file at higher quality. I only mentioned "Movie Maker" because it's usually on all PCs.

Windows XP (SP2) supports "Movie Maker 2". Windows ME supports "Movie Maker 1" (I believe in MM1 the highest quality output would be, Video for broadband).

Re: Second Choice
Considering the limited options available, if you cannot find a video site that allows you to upload video without adding additonal compression, then I guess Google Video (mp4)is as good as it's going to get.

I suggest you familiarize yourself with Movie Maker and iMovie first. You need to have a grasp of basic principles/concepts. Read the help section of each program, and do the tutorials.

While you're waiting for the other videos practice on Daniel's mp4 video. Download it, convert it (using Mpeg Streamclip) to DV format and import it into iMovie.

Here's a great resource site for Movie Maker. The menu has a section for "saving movies"

Here's an excellent book you should read. Contains a lot of iMovie info. Should be able to find it (somewhere) dirt cheap ($10 - $20)

When you need additional help, you can create a new topic and post specific questions (or search the iMovie forum) regarding problems you may encounter with different formats. Don't worry someone will assist you, but this thread is rather long and will become confusing.

Good Luck
