.dmg files forced into .xls files when downloading applications

Why are dmg files being forced into xls files when I'm attempting to download applications from websites?

Are you using Safari? Have you UNchecked the box in Preferences->General to open "Safe" files? Do you have StuffIt Deluxe? Something is messing with the download, I just tried the MoneyDance site and the download should be fine--anyway it was for me, just a standard .dmg file. But my Safari is set to download the file "as is" from a web site and nothing is set to do anything at all with the file.

Hi mospirit,

first of all: WELCOME TO THE DISCUSSIONS!

Sometimes files lose connection to their application. This can be solved quite easily though:
1. Download Cocktail, OnyX or Tiger Cache Cleaner and reset the "Launch Services Database".
2. Click any .dmg and type Apple-i to get the Information window. In the pop-up called "Open With" select "Other" and navigate to /System/Library/CoreServices. There select DiskImageMounter as default application. Finally back in the Information window click "Change All".

Phew! Part of what you suggested helped BUT I initially I couldn't even open the Cocktail download because it showed up as an .exe file. (I said .xls but all the binary files were actually .exe's.)

Here's what I had to do:

1. Click on the .exe file I downloaded
2. Get Info
3. Change the extension to .dmg
4. Open With
5. System folder > Core Services
6. Switch to All Applications from Recommended Applications
7. Clicked on Disk Image Manager
8. Add
9. Back to Open With
10. Clicked on Change All...

Thanks everyone!
