Melodyne Distortion?

Ok, so I know this isn't the Celemony forum, but I do know that a lot of us here LOVE to use the Melodyne plug-in in Logic, so I figured I'd ask to see if anybody here as experienced this.

I was tweaking some vocal harmonies tonight and noticed some distortion on the vocal line after importing the audio into Melodyne. I don't get the distortion when Melodyne is bypassed and it's noticeable before any correction on the track is done.

Has anyone else experienced this? I'll admit I haven't done a ton of trouble shooting on it yet, but it's 2 a.m. and my brain is fried so I figured I'd see if any of the Melodyne faithful here had experienced the problem and had any suggestions on what to look for first.

Hey noeq,

As I said in the above post, no distortion pre-Melodyne transfer. It's only showing up once it gets into Melodyne and even then it is only in one spot. I probably don't need to obsess about it too much because once the part is mixed with the rest of the harmonies you won't be able to notice it, but it still bothers me.

As for ReWire, none of that going on, either.

Hi,

Maybe the plugin AU version is buggy.I only tried the ReWire version.
If the distortion bothers you, then fix it,don't get complacent,or other things later on will get the same treatment. You do want the best possible mix, right??

Maybe you can do a slightly lower gain version of the bit that is distorting.Make a copy of the offending part, and lower the gain, then tune that. You should get good results then. That is what I would do.

Cheers

Hi,

I have Melodyne Create8 and use the stand alone and the Bridge. I've had it for maybe four months or so, and use it with Logic Pro, Mac OSX in current versions. I record clarinet (therefor relatively pure sounds compared to vocal), single tracks in Logic and then export one way or the other to Melodyne for pitch adjustment or whatever. It seems that periodically there will be some distortion in Melodyne's 'detected' version - not in the original file, not in the 'plain' version. The distortion takes the form of a brief series of clicks - in any case alterations in the wave form in Logic's sample editor. I've been to the Melodyne forums on this. The distortion mainly occurs when there is an abrupt leap in pitch without any gliss effect (something you do fairly frequently on the clarinet). I guess the detect algorhythm can't quite keep up. My work around has been to transfer back to Logic and cut the relatively short distorted segments out in the Sample Editor. Attempts to redraw with the pencil tool failed utterly. - I'd appreciate any help on this, too, if there's a solution,

Ray

Well I can confirm your observations Ray. I believe this to be an very rare
problem with the way Melodyne detection works with the audio. I have only noticed it on a instrument track where as you say the pitch can change very fast with out gliss. I have create8 and use the stand alone. I have had luck copy and pasting the same note inside of Melodyne but fortunately it is a very rare I have had this happen. In a year it has happened maybe 3 times.

I find that sometimes melodyne will barf out, and I have heard the distorted sound, it's this slight digital distortion which is real weird. Trick for me was to simple remove the vocal notes from melodyne and re transfer the section using the plugin. Seemed to work OK for me here. Doesn't every time though. it is indeed annoying. It is very very slight, and like you said only apparent when solo'd.

Yeah, that's exactly what it does. FWIW, I reopened the track again this evening (Melodyne plug still on it) from last night's save and the distortion was gone. I didn't even need to do a re-import. It had just "fixed" itself.

Annoying that these types of things happen, but good to know that it's not user error and just something to be on the lookout for.

Here's hoping those same fixes get applied to the plug-in. I just started using it recently and am absolutely floored by the versatility and ease of use. What they've been able to achieve up to this point is incredible. I've only run across a couple of bugs, most of them just being annoyances that you have to take time to re-import to fix, but the plug is amazing. I'm really happy with it. I'm sure once I figure out some of the subtleties I'll love it even more!

Couple of bugs in plugin I've come across include:

1- stops transferring sound if regions overlap, you have to un overlap stuff first
2- it seems to lose the speed at which things play, so some vocals will start singing ahead of the beat. Re transferring section by section solves that.

That said, my main issue with plugin is that if I want to have 2 lead vox tracks to do some parallel compression for example, I can't easily just export the changes and import them. I use Studio for that, and it seems to work better in general... that said, I often I have to bounce the track out to audio anyway if I'm only changing some things about a performance.
