MacBookPro shuts down if power cord removed!!!

Has anyone else come across a Mac Book Pro shutting down as soon as the power cord is pulled out. Batteries say it is fully charged. Bought it in November 2006, has been fine, 'til last week. Wasn't dropped or knocked in any way. I updated the firmware. Anything else to try? Help!!

macbookpro dual 2.16, Mac OS X (10.4.8), bought nov 2006

I just did my updates two days ago on my MacBookPro 17" CoreDuo, and since then, mine has been suddenly turning off without warning somewhere between 3 and 20 minutes after unplugging. I am always starting out with a full charge, and sometimes, when I plug in to restart (which is the only way it will restart), it shows 0% left on the battery, and other times, as much as 95% left.

My battery cycle count from System Profiler>Power is 225 cycles, so I am within the 300 cycles where Apple should replace the battery. I have a service appointment at the Genius Bar in two days.

I have repeated these results five times now.

Me too! exactly the same issue. Core Duo 2, Nov.

Reset PRAM, power manager, 10.4.9 update + combi updater, checked for stuck pins in magsafe. . . no help

Interestingly I swapped the battery with friend at work's identical MBP, my is fine off his battery and his would not work of mine i.e. despite displaying full charge both in OS X and on LEDs, it is dead.

Look forward to solving this one!

I just got my MacBookPro back from service yesterday. I took it in on Saturday, the 17th, to have the display swapped out (under warranty), and they replaced my battery (also under warranty), due to the issues I was experiencing.

I calibrated my replacement battery last night, following the special instructions for Intel portables, and ran it today on line power and on battery power, and it is behaving normally so far. Power levels are descending normally, as opposed to a free fall. It was strange though, and I am curious as to why everyone's batteries started to fail at once, given that they were put into service over a broad period of time last year.

The service people in my local Apple Store are really great.

So i just want to say that my problem has been resolved with a new battery, that apple sent me last week after i had called them a second time telling them that i had no intention traveling in order to have my computer looked at(No appleservice in Linköping, one of swedens 10 biggest cities). The new battery has been working absolutely fine and i even feel that it last a little longer than the old one did when it was new.

Hi

I was having exactly this problem. MacBook Pro, bought Dec 06. Called AppleCare, told them I have done all the checks such as resetting the battery etc.

They sent me a new battery, problem fixed with no recurrences. Looks like a load of dodgy batteries around Nov / Dec last year.

It may not be any help to you but when I looked in the System Profiler and gave the battery details to the AppleCare guy what made them pay attention was the fact the Amperage was showing as negative number even though the battery was showing as fully charged in the menu bar, on the battery and with the coconut battery and istat pro widgets.

Go for a new battery for sure...

So it would seem that the batteries were actually defective, and that the software update issue is probably coincidental.

Wow. At least that is an explanation that makes some sense.

Or perhaps, something in the update just hastened this lurking battery issue?

I am sorry that I did not get to see what my readings were, before they took my battery back. Oh well.
