!0.4.9 update disables Quartz Extreme and Core Image support

Same here. I'm running Mac OS X Server 10.4.9 Universal Binary (installed from the 10.4.7 UB disc the came with our XServe) on a dual proc 1.25GHz Mirror Door G4.

I came across this yesterday. But I had already been running OS X Server 10.4.9. No problems with the Radeon 9800 Pro video card. I casually did an update of iTunes and some other small thing, restarted, and found quartz extreme and core image broken. Went back to an older clone of 10.4.8. Problem fixed. Performed an update of the OS and Java, which broke the viddy tech again.

Toast 8 would not start and iMovie gave me the quartz extreme warning.

So I'm back on 10.4.8

I have the exact same issue, going from 10.4.7 Universal to 10.4.9 Universal. I've confirmed it on 2 separate machines with ATI Radeon 9000 Pro AGP cards. Updating to the latest ROM and drivers from ATI does not resolve the issue. Also mysteriously, the Software Update log is empty after the update!? I submitted a bug report to Apple.

Well, Apple responded to my bug report:

This is a follow up to Bug ID# 5217537. After further investigation it has been determined that this is a known issue, which is currently being investigated by engineering. This issue has been filed in our bug database under the original Bug ID# 5129369.

So apparently it's a known issue. Lets hope they resolve it!

I also have the same problem. I've done a clean install of 10.4.7 (Universal) (Graphics Work) then an update to 10.4.8 (Graphics Still Work) then update to 10.4.9 and no QE or CI. Has anyone tried the update with a PowerPC version of Mac OS X Server? Does QE and CI work for anybody with 10.4.9?

Well, I managed to fix it. After trying out the Fields screen saver ( http://uri.cat/software/Fields/index.php), I just had to get it working on this G4. 🙂 So, I made an ugly but effective hack. I'm currently running Mac OS X Server 10.4.10 (Universal).

Basically, get the Universal 10.4.8 Server Update (I don't think there is a combo version), extract all the ATI kexts from the installation package, back up your ATI kext in /System/Library/Extension/ and replace them with the 10.4.8 ones.

Core Image doesn't work, but Quartz Extreme is supported again. Amazingly, enough, I was able to do it all through the Finder and Pacifist. Just be prepared to enter your admin password a number of times.

Disclaimer: This worked for me. It may not work for you. I would think twice about doing this on a production machine. If this kills your machine it is not my fault and I am not obligated to help you fix it. Sorry, but dem's da brakes.

1) Download & mount the Mac OS X Server 10.4.8 Update (Universal):
http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosxserver1048updateuniversal.html

2) Use Pacifist ( http://www.charlessoft.com/) to open MacOSXServerUpd10.4.8Univ.pkg on the Mac OS X Server 10.4.8 Update image.

3) Navigate to /System/Library/Extensions/, select all files starting with ATI, and click Extract To... Save files to a folder on your Desktop (or some other convenient location). Quit Pacifist

4) In the Finder, go to /System/Library/Extension/ and copy all of the files starting with ATI to another folder (since its never a bad idea to backup critical drivers if in case something goes wrong ).

5) Delete the ATI files in /System/Library/Extension/ and copy the ones you extracted with Pacifist into /System/Library/Extension/

6) Delete /System/Library/Extensions.kextcache and reboot.

After you've rebooted and logged backed in you, open up System Profiler and see if Quartz Extreme is supported.
Since I am not 100% sure which kext the Radeon 9000 uses I just replaced all of the ATI files. With a little research or testing I'm sure you could figure out exactly which files need to be replaced.
