Speaker volume too loud after 10.4.9 update

Hello all!

My system is a Core Duo iMac 17". After installing the 10.4.9 update, the speakers output at much louder levels than they used to be. For example, with the keyboard volume control, now 1 brick corresponds to what used to be 5 bricks (and same for the sliders in the menu bar and system settings). In the headphones, everything seems to be just like it was, so only the speakers level changed.

Has anyone else experienced this?

there is some discussion of this in another thread called 10.4.9 sound loud at http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=4252832#4252832
the new low level is the old mid level and but the new max level is the same as the old max level. at least on my machine. I don't think anybody has found any way to deal with this yet. I went back to the 10.4.8.
