How do I change Software Update server back to normal w/o server access?

Our company split into two seperate companies. We moved and the server stayed. All of our machines were on the server and had portable home directories. We no longer connect to a server. And the server we were connected to is no more. So we can't access it at all. Reinstall is not an option.

I'm having trouble running software update on the laptops. They are trying to find our Software Update server that we used to get our software updates. I need to know how to tell Software Update to go look for updates on Apple's server.

Also, is there a way to get rid of any settings that were managed by the server before we moved? It takes me a while to log in because it's trying to find the server.

Thanks for any help.

There is a much easier way to point software update either to your server or switch back to Apple. Download "Software Update Client Configuration" from http://www.netsettings.com/SoftwareUpdateClientConfiguration.html really simple GUI so you don't need to mess about with terminal, unless of course you want to!!!

Hi

Remove the apple.com.SoftwareUpdate.plist as well as the Directory Services folder from /Library/Preferences and then unbind from the defunct OD Server. To do this launch Directory Access (Applications/Utilities), click the lock and supply the admin name and password to make changes, select LDAPv3 plug in and delete the server configuration thats there, restart the mac.
