Sprite spilt on laptop - I know what to do, I just have a couple questions

Ok so the other day I spilt sugary sprite (I know - BAD NEWS with all of the sugar) directly onto the top of my keyboard. I immediatly shut down the power and turned it upside down to drain all of the sprite out of it. I let it dry out for 2 days and then when I tried to turn it on - it turned on with no problem. I'm currently not having any problems with my laptop, but I know I can't just let the dried sugary pop sit in my laptop and that I need to get it cleaned out.

So, should I take it somewhere to have it cleaned or should I do it myself? I'm not computer illiterate, I just don't want to take any chances. Could I seriously screw things up by cleaning it? I guess since I'm asking these questions I should just have it professionally cleaned.

Also, even though everything is working fine now (besides it being a little sticky) I know that it is probably going to have some serious issues down the line even if I do get it cleaned out. When I brought it to the apple store I was told that the repairs are going to cost about $800 when it does eventually die. So, should I just have it repaired now (even though I can't afford an $800 repair bill) or should I just wait until it dies to have it repaired. I was told that even if I do wait the same parts will be damaged and that the cost won't go up. So I either do it now or just wait unil it dies... I'm just hoping that it won't be anytime soon - I need to start saving lol.

Finally, does anyone have an estimate of how long it could take for my laptop to die? Has this happened to anyone else - where it miraculously worked just fine after it was drowned in pop? How long after did it take for it to die?

Also, does anyone have any final suggestions? I'm going to try to avoid using my computer as much as possible and to keep it turned off when I'm not using it. Anything else I should know?

Thanks for the help!!!

Personally, I'd have to clean it. BUT, depends on how technically savvy you are. If you can take the laptop apart, down to the motherboard and separate daughter-boards and connectors, there are definite ways to safely clean it. The tough part is not the electronics (since it works) but the mechanics. Cleaning any of the smaller mechanical parts is very delicate (SuperDrive).

If you hit up some of the electronic repair (old school) shops in your area - you'll find some what used to be freon-based spray cleaners. Talk to the old school guys there. They'll know exactly what to use. These will wash away the sugar and sticky, and leave it clean and dry, WITHOUT using conductive solutions. That's the trick.

Thanks for the help. And for someone that posted above - my laptop was open and I spilt it directly onto the keys. I think I'm just going to have someone else do the cleaning for me - I don't want to take any chances. I'm still not having any problems with it - my only fear is that down the line the sugar will corrode the metal and that could have some serious concequences - so I want to get it cleaned just to prevent any excess corrosion.
