Win XP laptop doesn't see wireless network

My Powerbook uses a Verizon Wireless broadband pcmcia card for internet access. Using my PB as a base station allows our iMac to share the network connection. The windows XP laptop will not see the network. I have:

1) used the hardware control panel to ensure that the wireless card in the XP machine is installed and configured.

2) attempted to set up a new wireless connection, but it says there are no wireless networks detected.

3) ensured that the PC firewall is disabled

What else should I be looking at? I just want this laptop to be able to get on the network for internet and email access.

Verizon will tell me that this not a supported configuration, but it's worked so far just fine for the two macs. Gotta use this PC for a large project that will take several months!

Any suggestions or pointing me at good directions will be most appreciated.

Discovered that there is a slider physical switch for the wireless card in this Toshiba laptop -- the messages had kept talking about switching the card on, with no directions for doing so. Finally found this tiny switch that blends into the case along the frong of the keyboard. Slid it over, and it immediately saw the airport network and connected.

I have a similar problem. I have an Imac intel with Wireless Card Type: AirPort Extreme (0x14E4, 0x89). My son has a IBM thinkpad AP20 RUNNING Windows 2000 + D-link card we were told that we would be able to use the AirportExpress Base station to share internet access. At present the imac seems to connect to internet wirelessly no problem, however, we cannot get the laptop to see or share the internet connection. Any advice please, sorry about the rambling, about to tear my hair out.

I just set up the AEBS on my imac and powerbook, I'm trying to set up my sister's windows xp. it will not recognize the AEBS in the airport utility. when I have it connected via ethernet it sees the AEBS, but when I try to connect to the wireless network it states that windows is unable to connect to the selected network, it may no longer be in range...I've turned off the firewall and the wireless card is enabled...any thoughts?

What does this forum actually offer? I've been online for 24 years and usually saw answers in a BBS.

My father-in-law is in the hospital so I'm trying to get both his XP machines back on my WLAN since I switched up to the Extreme Base Station. Set for N[B&G] and all the Macs on the system locked on in 30 seconds.

The XP machines - their WLAN cards see a strong signal - but, using either the Airport utility I loaded on each or Windoze own crap, all I get is no wireless net work visible - no base station visible. Wasted half the day, so far.

Same WinXP problem on a desktop using a USB connected D-Link G120 wireless device. No signal detected by the D-Link from the Airport BS that is 10 feet away whereas every mac in the house (3 of them) gets an excellent signal. PC picks up wireless networks that aren't mine and I guess come from the neighbours, and picks up a signal from the old Belkin wirless router that I'm trying to replace. But no sign of an Airport signal. Windows Network Diagnostics didn't help. Nor did switching the Airport to a manual connection and a lower number - even tried #8 and confirmed it set for n(b+g) as mentioned above.
I would welcome any ideas, short of ditching the PC. I need it to get onto the office VPN.

Hey Guys, I just got it working. The airport express wireless is set to automatic default on channel 13 (apparently many windows pc's cannot see 13).

Using the airport utility (via ethernet or a mac that can see the wireless network) go to manual set up and under wireless you can change the channel to whatever you want (I made mine channel 11) and it works fine now.

I hope that helps

I had a similar situation. I have a new Macbook Pro that connects wirelessly with my new AEBS no problems and a wired Windows XP system that sees it just fine, but my wireless Windows XP laptop was having problems even seeing the AEBS. It is using a Netgear WG511v1 adapter. I am at the latest version of Airport Utility software (v5.1) as well as firmware on the AEBS (v7.1).

I was able to get it to see and even at times connect with different configurations, but it was hit and miss and very frustrating. I finally discovered that the AEBS had to be set with no security for me to connect consistently. I was also using Channel 8, but I don't think that really made a difference. This card supports WEP & WPA, but I could not see or connect using either security method.

I then upgraded the drivers for this adapter to 3.0 (was at 2.1x). Once I upgraded I was able to connect using either no security or WEP. I did however have to name the SSID specificly for Windows to find it as it still says no networks available even while connected (very strange).

To set a specific SSID network for Windows to view and connect, go to Start, Control Panel, Network Connections. Right mouse click on the Wireless network icon and choose Properties. Click on the Wireless Networks tab at the top of the Properties page. Click the Add button. Type in the SSID name of your AEBS, set the Network Authentication to Open and set the Data Encyrption to the correct security method (WEP or WPA [Although my Windows doesn't provide a WPA selection]). Uncheck the box next to "The key is provided for me automatically". And type in your AEBS key in both fields. Click OK and OK again on the Properties page. Hopefully it should find it and connect to it now, even though it still never shows up within the View Wireless Networks screen.

I had this problem with my son's Dell after installing Airport Extreme. After spending hours following all the above advice to no avail, I found a thread on another site that suggested it wasn't set up for WPA security. Sure enough, when I changed back to WEP I could connect with no problem. I did download all the XP updates but evidently the problem is the wireless card. It is Truemobile card 1180 internal wireless modem so it was either change back to WPA and keep him off the internet or use a really long WEP password and hope for the best.

Now, we need to figure out how to get the XBOX on live.
