I had a similar situation. I have a new Macbook Pro that connects wirelessly with my new AEBS no problems and a wired Windows XP system that sees it just fine, but my wireless Windows XP laptop was having problems even seeing the AEBS. It is using a Netgear WG511v1 adapter. I am at the latest version of Airport Utility software (v5.1) as well as firmware on the AEBS (v7.1).
I was able to get it to see and even at times connect with different configurations, but it was hit and miss and very frustrating. I finally discovered that the AEBS had to be set with no security for me to connect consistently. I was also using Channel 8, but I don't think that really made a difference. This card supports WEP & WPA, but I could not see or connect using either security method.
I then
upgraded the drivers for this adapter to 3.0 (was at 2.1x). Once I upgraded I was able to connect using either no security or WEP. I did however have to name the SSID specificly for Windows to find it as it still says no networks available even while connected
(very strange).
To set a specific SSID network for Windows to view and connect, go to
Start, Control Panel, Network Connections. Right mouse click on the Wireless network icon and choose
Properties. Click on the
Wireless Networks tab at the top of the Properties page. Click the
Add button. Type in the
SSID name of your AEBS, set the
Network Authentication to
Open and set the
Data Encyrption to the correct security method (WEP or WPA [Although my Windows doesn't provide a WPA selection]). Uncheck the box next to
"The key is provided for me automatically". And type in your AEBS key in both fields. Click OK and OK again on the Properties page. Hopefully it should find it and connect to it now, even though it still never shows up within the View Wireless Networks screen.
