OS 9.2 Freezes with ATI Radeon 9000 ADC/VGA Adapter

Hello everyone

I posted a question here some time ago, in regard to using an older ATI Radeon Pro Mac graphics card and OS 9.2

http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=4106596#4106596

Well as it turns out, I can boot into OSX just fine with no problems, but when I restart into OS 9.2, the system gets as far as desktop without the control strip as it gets stuck every time and I then have to do a force shut down.

Just to recap my specs: I'm using a Quicksilver 800, with #2 internal HD's - one loaded with OSX, and the other with OS 9.2

Now I'm wondering if the problem is with a needed driver for OS 9.2, or could it be that this particular ATI 9000, has the older ADC and DVI-I connectors (no VGA port), requiring me to use the Apple ADC to VGA adapter for my current monitor requiring VGA?

Any ideas would be appreciated

Thank you so much
Mike

Hi, Mike -

Can't help with the video card question. Perhaps if you add a post in the other thread as a reply to Carl's, it will appear in his My Posts listing and draw his attention, at which time you can arrange for the email of the drivers.

On the offchance that there is something else at play, such as an extensions conflict -

Can you boot in OS 9 with Extensions Off? To do that, hold down the Shift key from the beginning of startup, keep it held down until the Extensions Off message appears on the Welcome screen.

Also, OS 9 typically includes two ATI drivers that can cause conflicts in some machines. To address that, boot the machine into OS 9, immediately press the Spacebar, keep it held down until Extensions Manager opens, which it should do just before extensions would normally start loading. At that time check the status of the extensions named -
ATI Radeon 3D Accelerator
ATI Rage 128 3D Accelerator

Make sure the Rage one is disabled (unchecked) and that the Radeon one is enabled (checkmarked). Then continue the startup.

Hi Don
Hi Simon

Ok, well it seems, the only way I can accomplish anything, (unless I'm missing something), is to FIRST take the 9000 Graphics card out of the computer, and put the old OEM back in. As I mentioned, leaving the 9000 in, and while trying to boot into OS 9.2 becomes a total freeze after you come up onto desktop. It seems that it never actually loads completely because the control strip doesn't load at all.

Now, the question is, once I put the old card back in, can I make adjustments for:
ATI Radeon 3D Accelerator
ATI Rage 128 3D Accelerator

Making sure the Rage is disabled (unchecked) and that the Radeon one is enabled (checkmarked), then continue the startup.

OR

Will doing this create a problem for the CURRENT configuration using the older OEM graphics card?

Thanx

Hi, ECODE. You should have no trouble installing the new driver and deactivating the old one while the original card is in place, if that seems to be what your circumstances require.

Merely install the new driver, which won't be loaded and active until the next startup. Then disable the old one in the Extensions Manager — it will continue to be active until shutdown, but won't be loaded when you start up again with the new card in place. You might run into a world of trouble if you start up again with the old card still installed, though, so don't do that.

Ok, I'll try that - in fact I got a an email from Dave who sent me the driver for the ATI 9000 (very nice of him)

We'll see how it goes - here's a recap:
Put the old OEM Video Card back in order to gain functionality, go to extensions manager, (in the HD systems folder), uncheck the box for the old Rage OEM card)

Boot down

Now put the 9000 back in, and reboot and hope for the best

If this doesn't work, I wonder what esle I might try?
If I'm not mistaken, it seems other folks have OS 9.2 working fine with the ATI 9000 - yes?

Wonder if my trouble has anything to do with running two hard drives each with a different OS? (OSX & 9.2)?

Anyway, first things first - we'll give it a go
Thank you eww

Hello again to all my friends 🙂

Ok well gentleman Dave wanted me to provide a little more clarification as to how the driver that he emailed me for the ATI 9000 Mac Pro Saved the Day.

I know that Don, and eww also suggested a few things about making sure the proper extensions were checked off. The extensions for the ATI 128 MB Card, and not the ATI 32 MB OEM Video card - etc

Well, although some of us thought that OS 9.2 may have a driver for the 9000 Card - I guess it doesn't. And the 9000 Mac Pro card I bought obviously didn't come with a driver install disc.

As Dave Hamilton pointed out, Radeon no longer has the Driver as a download on their site. That's why I was so thankful that he offered to email it to me.

But the story doesn't stop here - this Odyssey of aggravation actually began when Fed Ex SCREWED up the delivery regarding an Ebay purchase for the first 9000 card. Well the Fed Ex drivers here in my local Philly neighborhood must be recovering alcoholics because man they are totally useless .....

Ok so now it took over a month for me to get the sender his money back from Fed Ex which naturally required patience and honesty.

Sooooo I finally get a replacement card from the Ebay seller, and low and behold I'm ready to pop it in - can't wait!

BUT

Of course we see now that OS9 will sometimes actually FREEZE with a video card that doesn't have an appropriate driver.

I thought maybe this could be a glitch caused by installing two Hard Drives within my 800 Quicksilver? Each with a different OS - No No Nonsense - ALL we needed was that driver!

Sooooo I loaded Dave's driver on a disc, put it on desktop of OS9 in my Quicksilver, and as 'eww' pointed out here, I should be able to open that driver file (while the older OEM Card was STILL installed), extract it/unstuff it, and ONLY when I rebooted would I see that the whole process was successful as it was! 'eww' was RIGHT!

Now I can continue to freely boot into OS9, or OSX and have the added power of the ATI 9000.

And that's the Odyssey of the ATI 9000, and how Dave Hamilton saved the day!

God Bless
Good Day
Good Night
