Anyone hook up Apple TV to a video projector yet?

Just wondering.

My ATV is hooked up to my non-HD projector using component cables to VGA with a 480p resolution. It works fine, just had to set projector in 16:9 mode so that things didn't look squished. It's a temp solution as I'm getting an HD projector to replace this one soon, but it works.

Jim,

This is precisely the projector I use with my AppleTV - I found it powerful for its price, and relatively affordable for an HD Projector (just under 1,000 dollars.)

Not having to take up space in the house for a Television is the primary reason I bought mine. Since we watch no television in the house anyway, it didn't make sense to own one. We have it mounted and it projects against a wall in the house.

I'm curious, since you have an identical setup - Was there a reason you chose to hook up via component vs. HDMI?

The DVI port for my projector is reserved for my Momitsu V880-DX DVD Player (pretty versatile player). Using DVI for the DVD Player gives the best image quality. Since Apple TV is near DVD quality, component video connection will do fine. Unless I go out and buy a DVI/HDMI switcher for digital connection for both my DVD Player and Apple TV.

Hopefully, future video projectors have two or more digital input connections.

In my case, I chose component over HDMI simply because the switching and cabling was easier. I've got all the ports on the back of the HD70 filled (composite, component, HDMI, s-video, VGA) - all 25 ft cables running to the back of the video electronics shelf. (thank heavens for monoprice.com! 🙂

My AV reciever does not do HDMI switching, and most of my video sources (including an xbox360 and wii) don't supply HDMI. So when I ran out of ports on the receiver, I bought a cheapo "gamer" 6-way component switch from Fry's ( http://shop2.outpost.com/product/4737609), which has worked well for me, despite somewhat spotty reviews on the net.

Most of the video material I have to show from the ATV is well below HD quality, anyway. So I just ran it into one of the switcher's ports for convenience. I have the HDMI cable plugged directly into my DVD player.

BTW, I did use my DVD player to do a direct comparison of HDMI vs. component using my HD70. I used some rather demanding material (2001). While I could see some subtle differences, and I think the HDMI looked better, I would not be confident that I would consistently pick HDMI as the "better" choice in a blind test.

And yes, that projector is awesome... 🙂

Hi All, I have a JVC AV-48WP55 (Wide Screen Projector TV). I can get video from the compomnent cables. but I get no sound when using the audio cables. I tried to use different cables, but I get the same results, and I made sure there were pushed in all the way. From reading the other posts, does sound not work on the projector tv's?

Do I need to plugg my APPLETV sound into a receiver so that I get sound? I am going crazy trying to figure it out. I have a 15inch HDTV which I can test it on, but I am lazy. lol. Anyone else having issues hearing sound from a projector when it is directly connected to the APPLETV?

Thanks,
Joe

Well, I just answered my own question. I was plugging in Composite cables and then plugging in audio cables by using the red & white cable, and not plugging in the yellow on the tv side. If I am doing this, then I am using two inputs.
Ahhhh. So to hear audio, I need to plug the red & white into a receiver. I have not tried this, but I will when I go home.

Component video worked great with the InFocus SP4805. I'm attempting the HDMI hookup through the InFocus HDMI to M1DA conversion adapter. InFocus confirmed the projector's M1DA port will accept resolutions up to 1080i. I'm getting 420p video feed from the AppleTV HDMI with no option to select other resolutions. The analog audio feed is also way out of synch with the HDMI video. Due to component location I'm not capable of any other options. Checking in with Apple support to see if I just wasted a lot of time and money.

Apple cannot confirm but suspects the ATV is not going to work directly via HDMI into the InFocus SP 4805. There is no workaround for the audio synch using analog sound and HDMI video (too far to run Toslink). The ATV refuses to supply any video over 480P and displays no further supported resolution while using HDMI. I unplugged the ATV and patched my HD SAT/DVR into the PJ with the same HDMI cable and everything works great, video at 720P or even 1080i while the analog audio remained in synch. I've swapped places between the SAT and ATV for now. COmponent video is still the way to go. Need to find a better solution, probably a switcher or new AV receiver. Let me know if anyone else has attempted a direct HDMI / M1-DA connection to ATV and their InFocus SP4805.

Like many in this post I am using component video cables to my first generation HD Projector (HP vp6121) and the digital optical audio to my home stereo (Sony receiver STR-DB830). The system works well.

I too have noticed that iTunes video media is recorded at 720p and leaves an unfortunately blank screen at higher resolutions (nice audio though). I have personally encoded media at 1080i (max my projector supports) and it works from the ATV as well. Now if the ATV would just auto-detect the maximum resolution of the media so I don't have to adjust the settings or leave them at 720p for everything.

Hi. I need your advice:

My Panasonic projector PT-AE700E (HD) does not recognize the apple tv. Screen is blue.

When connected to the network it does not show in iTunes.

I guess I have to lower the resolution in the apple tv, but since I cannot see a thing, I have no idea how to do that. Changing resolutions in the projector is not an option since it is fully automatic, meaning full res is not supported.

I dont have an alternative screen availble, unless buying additional cables (hdmi to dvi) for my 20"apple lcd (don't know if this would work anyway?).

Any suggestions on how to make this work?
