old Sony Clie? Can I transfer addresses?

I have all my contact information in my old Sony Clie (PEG-SJ20). I use the Palm software that came with it to sync it with my Windows work computer.

Is there anyway to get that information into my iMac address book -- other than re-typing it all?

Thanks in advance!

Dear Marie,

you might wish to give AB Transfer a try:

http://www.turingart.com/abtlan_en.htm

It is a solution to import, export or convert AB data.

First, you should check, if you can export your Clie contact data as CSV [comma separated values] or TSV [tab separated values] values. AB Transfer easily imports these file formats into your OS X address book.

Hi.

Well, before purchasing The Missing Sync software, you should try downloading the Palm Desktop for Mac 4.2.1 Rev D (Revision D is compatible with Tiger), and installing it. Then open iSync and under devices, select "Enable Palm OS Syncing", as it will validate and install the necessary conduits.
After you've done that, plug your Clie in a usb port, and in iSync, go to Devices/Add Device and see if it works. If it doesn't, then mark/space is the solution.

The download link for the Palm Desktop 4.2.1 Rev D is:

Hi Marie.

The Palm Desktop for Mac should work. There are people who sync their Clies thru iSync and Palm Desktop. However, I must admit, It's much easier just to install The Missing Sync, and it's better integrated with OS X native applications iCal and Address Book.
Also, the install of Palm Desktop is fairly easy, but the uninstalling is not for the faint of heart...(It doesn't have an uninstaller anymore).
On the other hand, The Missing Sync has its own uninstaller inside the The Missing Sync folder.

So, you'd better go for The Missing Sync for Palm OS. You can download a trial copy:

Good Luck.

Henry:
Your help is a godsend!

Do you mind me asking you two basic/newbie question? My Sony Clie hotsync cradle is currently hooked up to my work laptop (windows computer). Everything is synched there.

1. When I hook the hotsync cradle to my iMac (after I install the "missing sync" software), will I be able to reverse sync from my Sony Clie to my iMac ?

2. Should I stick with the missing sync software from here foreward, and never again hook up my hotsync cradle to my windows pc? (i.e., will my Sony get screwed up by syncing to both the iMac and my windows computer?) I suspect the answer is a clear, yes, but worth the asking.

Thanks a million!

Hi Marie:

1. As far as I know, the Apple Sync Services (the process used by OS X to sync data between the computer and external devices) does not allow to overwrite the local information with the data from the handheld. It allows to synchronize and to overwrite handheld data with the computer data. You wil have to be careful to not to select the latter, because you'd wipe your clie's data.
So, you will have to set the appropiate conduits (usually Contacts, Events and Taks) to synchronize.

These are a couple of screenshots for The Missing Sync (just for reference):

2. I don't know if your clie will be able to sync normally to the Windows PC again. I suspect there is no reason to not work, because both The Missing Sync and the Palm OS for Clie (PC) are only intended to comunicate with the device, retrive data from it, and send data to it, and they should not alter its OS, file promats, etc. But as I said previously, I don't know what will happen. You will have to backup and try, I guess.

Good Luck.
