I just bought a brand new 46" Samsung LCD TV with 1080p (model LNT4661F) and hooked up my tv to it with a MonsterCable HDMI cable. The picture is perfect, but there is absolutely no sound. I've made sure there weren't any audio settings on the TV that needed to be made in order for HDMI audio to work. I've also exchanged the HMDI cable. I've even exchanged the tv! I still have the same problem. Audio works fine when using component cables. Anyone else have this issue? Is there something I'm missing?
Knowledge base article
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305175 has a section for troubleshooting a "no sound" behavior and includes information if you're encountering no sound through HDMI. I suggest reviewing that article and see if it helps for your situation. Additionally, knowledge base article
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305211 (also linked to from the first article) covers this in more detail.
If you plug your hdmi connector into your receiver, the receiver may no support video and audio at the same time. I know sunfire only support video and you have to use optical cable to get audio.
I have a Samsung LN-T4065 and have the same problem - No Sound.
Further research yeilded the following:
HDMI 1.3 implements HDCP (High definition Bandwidth content protection). This is implemented to safeguard rights of movie moghuls from folks who want to steal the high def DVDs. This requires that complete support of this protocol on part of television manufacturers. Part of this means that if the transmitting device (Apple) does not meet the code exactly, the TV will (a) not display the video OR (b) not provide the High Definition sound. This is what is happening .
I talked to the Apple Store who talked to Level 2 support and apparently Apple is aware of this but could not offer a solution at this time for this problem. All the TVs I have seen in the Portland area Apple store are from last year which do not adhere to the HDMI 1.3 standard. Per my undestanding HDMI 1.3 is the future and all devices will have to comply with this to meet the Movie moghuls requirement for HDCP.
Yes, one can use the optical port or the analog ports. Optical port does provide the Optical digital audio. However, my TV (and none to my knowledge) accept a Optical digital audio signal (they all put out a Optical Digital Audio).
The analog audio ports do not support the high defintiion sound and only put out stereo signal.
I decided to return my Apple TV (I hated to do this) and wait until Apple decides to offer a solution for this dilema.
The Samsung LN-T4065 picture quality and capabilities are far superior to anything I have seen in the market and I had no desire to return this TV just so I could watch non 1080P info from Apple TV (as much as I truly like Apple TV).
Thanks for the response...however using the Red and white audio is the analog audio and the quality is not the same as the 5.1 digital audio out of the HDMI. I wanted the high quality sound hence I used HDMI. The optical output does give a high quality sound but unfortunately most TVs I know do not accept the optical output...the only thing I know as some one else mentioned whcih takes optical output is an amplifier/ preamplifier.
Called Apple today (May 16th) and it seems there is still no resolution.
I also bought a new Samsung LN-T4061F LCD TV 2 weeks ago and when my ATV unit arrived 2 days ago, I had the same problem with the HDMI audio not working.
I took it to several stores in the area and it also doesn't work with the same Model at the store, however, the LN-T4053 (non-1080p) model the audio works fine.
So it appears it's not all the LNT models but just some that don't work.
For those of you (like me) intending to return the ATV, do so before 30 days from the order date. I only received the ATV on May 14th, but my order date was May 1st. Doesn't seem fair, but that's Apple policy.
Hopefully they will have a fix out soon, in the interim the workaround using the component audio outputs works fine.

The problem was with the specific Samsung model I purchased. Other Samsungs worked fine. I ended up exchanging my Samsung for a Sony. Samsung contacted me weeks later saying they acknowledged the issue, and it was due to faulty HDMI ports on the TV. They were willing to send out a technician to replace the HDMI ports.
I am also having the same issue where I purchased the Apple TV this past weekend along with the HDMI connection that the sales person at Apple reccommended I purchase. The quality of the picture on my 32' Polaroid flat screen is wonderful but still no sound. I even went out to Best Buy last evening to to purchase the fiber optical connection in hopes that would solve my problem, but of course did NOT.
I called Apple Care and after an hour conversation with two technicians they could not assist me with a resolution. However, one of the techs did mention that the fiber optic cable will never work with the HDMI because it gets canceled out. It was reccommened that I take the Apple TV back to the store to make sure that it is functioning properly, but I don't think that's necessary after reading all of your comments. Should I just return the product all together and call it quits?
