Hello Slimsurf,

This does not mean your mac has a dire problem at all,

Before & after all apple updates you need to run disk permissions repair
Run disk permissions repair now, till you get this message only only: make sure to click on the button on the left of the DU window.

Permissions repair complete
The privileges have been verified or repaired on the selected volume

when you get a message, where the permissions differ when you verify
go ahead & run repair disk permission, I run repair instead of verify.

See this article, Travis A.'s Regular Maintenance/General Troubleshooting it helps explains the disk utility, running disk permissions repair &Disk repair which is done with a restart from the Tiger install dvd 1.

Look at this site for info on updating & on speed http://www.macmaps.com/

To speed up Safari make sure that you do some internet cutter cleaning.
OnyX is a good freeware tool & this article is helpful for some guidance on, Clearing caches with OnyX

There is much to read here in the User Tips Library, if you are
so inclined.

Hope this is helpful to you.

Hi -

Adding to Maria's helpful comments, slowness in Safari can also be a result of your Network settings. If you are using High Speed Broadband or Cable, I have found creating a specific location in your System preferences>Network panel seems to speed things up. Here's how you create the location:

Go to the System Preferences>Network panel. The default setting for location is "automatic". To change:
- Location - set up a personal location by clicking on the Location drop down menu and selecting "add a location". Use a name familiar to you. Once established, select "apply".
- Next, click on the "Show" drop down menu and select Network Port Configurations. Only Ethernet or Airport ought to be checked. Move Ethernet or Airport to the top of the list (you can drag it). Select "apply".
- Back to the "Show" menu, select "Ethernet" or "Airport". Click on the TCP panel. There, enter 4.2.2.1 and 4.2.2.2 (separate lines) in the DNS servers box and select "apply". If you use Comcast, you'll have to contact them as they have their own DNS codes.

Creating a personal location, plus adding the DNS codes seems to speed things up. Otherwise, the "automatic" function has a tendency to "search" for available locations, hence creating the lag.

In the Finder, go to your Utilities folder and select "Terminal". Once the screen is open enter lookupd -flushcache and press return. This clears out the DNS cache. Once done, quit Terminal.

Restart the computer. Open Safari. Go to the Safari Menu and "Empty Cache", or press Apple/Option/E keys. I suggest doing this daily, or before you start a browsing session, as the cache is unnecessary for high-speed users.

There are other steps you can take, but for now, the above ought to get you up to speed.
