Anyone know of free games for OS 9?

Hi everyone,
When i get my MacBook (hopefully in the very near future!), I'm planning on giving my Rev. A iMac, running OS 9.2.1 with 96mb RAM, to my little sister. Does anyone know of any good free non-memory requiring games? I'm not asking for anything fancy like WoW, because seeing as she loved the globe puzzle game on my friend's iMac, just free, simple games such as Tetris or whatever would be great.

Thanks!

iMac G3 Rev. A 233 mhz, 96mb RAM, 10gb HD (currently my only Mac, not my main computer!) Mac OS 9.2.x G1 Black 2GB Nano, and getting a MacBook hopefully soon!

No prob.

I thought of a couple of other games:
-Oregon Trail, if you can find it (If so, tell me - I want one too! :D)
-Chuck Yeager's Air Combat - THE flight sim from 1993, it'll run under OS 9 (but not classic), and everything back to our old Mac II! It may be next to impossible to find, but pick it up if you do!
See here: http://www.mac.org/
mac.org has many old apps - most games are demos, but not all, and there's other stuff too!

Also, 96 meg is rather tiny, to say the least. I would assume you have a 64 and a 32 meg card, right? Well, you can replace the 32 with a 128 and get up to 192! Take a look at Other World Computing - you can get a 128 card for $18! It takes a bit more work to install the RAM in a Rev A iMac, but it's not too bad. ( http://www.macworld.com/2001/10/bc/howtoimac/)

Also, Apple says that your iMac maxes out at 128 MB - but this is because they haven't tested it with larger cards. The iMac can actually get up to 384 MB, so you should be find dropping a 128 in there. I will say, I went from 128 in my iMac DVSE to 192 - and there was a very noticeable increase in speed. Going from 192-384 (I put a 256 MB in) set OS 9 on fire.

There also use to be alot of shareware that you could try and pay for if you liked them and kept playing them.

freeware Games that I remembered, listed on versiontracker
Firefall
Drops
GridX -maybe good it has 5 stars

Ambrosia has excellent shareware games!!!

there is also educational games, plus backgammon, yahtzee, chess, ect..

Thank you both! I'm going to have a look at those sites and pick out some good games for her. She is very excited about having a computer in her room, and I am very excited about getting it out of my room. (It's hideous. Not the design of course, just the color.) She was always playing on AppleWorks in my room anyway. 😀

Hello!

I realize that your post is answered, but I figurerd I'd chip in a few ideas:

Ever played Glider Pro? I used to waste hours on this game 😀 It's a free download for OS X and 9, since the company went broke. It's a good, kid friendly game. They even have a version for 68k macs under OS 6!

You probably know about Starcraft. I'm not sure if/where they sell the Mac version anymore, but it ran on our 400mhz iMac DVSE under 9.2 with 128MB just fine. If she's a fan of RTS games, she has to play it! Plus, theres actually a patch on Blizzard's site to allow the game to run under OS X - very cool.

Another good game is Sim City 2000. It runs quite well on the iMac hardware, and it's old enough now that you might be able to find it for no more than a few bucks - if not for free! It might require more than 96MB, but my friends had it running on a Mac circa 1996, so it should be OK. Sim City 3000 needs too much power, and Sim City "classic" will be impossible to find/not un under OS 9.

OK, thank you so much for the ideas and tips! I'll think about the RAM when I can (read: when I'm done paying off my mom for my beautiful new MB, which won't take long cause I only have $40 left to pay), and I'll give you a "solved" star and pretend it was just 2 "helpful" stars, cause both of your posts were very helpful. 😉

Some of my favorites are oldies but goodies:

Solarian - arcade style game. Worked under System 7 and works under 9. Now free, I believe. Was incredibly sophisticated for its day and age (1990) but may appear a bit dusty now.

Crystal Quest - arcade style game. Another System 7 game that works well, too well actually, under OS 9. I remember playing this on a SE and once you got to a high level it actually became easier to shoot the monsters because the whole thing slowed down due to memory requirements. I played this on my G3 not long ago and the critters zipped around the screen so quickly I got killed on the first level. I know this was once shareware but has been released for free.

Tetris I have version 1 dating ca. 1988 but runs under OS 9.
