Poof Icon retrieval?

Accidently grabbed an icon from the dock and did the infamous "poof". I'm not sure alias I poofed! Is there a way I can check? Retrieve?

Any app that gets installed into the /Applications folder needs admin access to install.

And yes, I realize that many apps can be installed inside your home folder. This requires no admin rights. But these apps running in a non-admin account still cannot modify anything outside the user's home folder, unless the user enters the admin password. The same program running in an admin account can take over the whole system.

And yes, I realize that data inside your home folder can be very sensitive, which is why it is important to practice safe computing even when running as non-admin.

But the fact is that you are handing your entire system over to a hacker by running as admin. By running as non-admin, everything outside your home folder is locked down.

Wow, great advice. Thanks. So here's a question, I have been using this iMac ever since we got it in Admin "mode". How easy is it to create a new user with my same apps, specifications, settings, etc. Sorry, I sound so hopeless... lol. I appreciate all the help.

Just create a new user account and give it admin privileges. Then uncheck "Allow user to administer this computer" from your original user account. That takes less than a minute and doesn't require you to move any files.

Hi Király, could you drop me an email? I'd like to discuss this further. Your Mac can be well and truly hacked from a non-admin account but some off this information is too sensitive for the boards.

Using OnyX to run script from the old account but now it says I can't even do that in my non-admin account. It doesnt even ask for a admin log-in and password. Should I reinstall OnyX to my admin desktop? Is there an easier way to get it on my Admin desktop from non admin?

OnyX is one of the very few apps that needs to run in an admin account. So you need to switch to your admin account and run it there, or just temporary make your user account an admin account.
