No error burning CD

I use Windows XP Media Center Edition. I'm able to burn cd's in Windows Media and Sonic, and I've tried 2 different types of cd's and nothing will burn in iTunes. I've run through help and diagnostics and nothing has fixed the problem. I use iTunes 7.1.1.5 and it's the newest DL, I checked.

The following are the CD diagnostics it ran:

Microsoft Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 (Build 2600)
Dell Inc. Dell DV051
iTunes 7.1.1.5
CD Driver 2.0.6.1
CD Driver DLL 2.0.6.2
LowerFilters: PxHelp20 (2.0.0.0),
UpperFilters: GEARAspiWDM (2.0.6.1),

Current user is an administrator.

If you have multiple drives on the same IDE or SCSI bus, these drives may interfere with each other.
Some computers need an update to the ATA or IDE bus driver, or Intel chipset. If iTunes has problems recognizing CDs or hanging or crashing while importing or burning CDs, check the support site for the manufacturer of your computer or motherboard.

okay, just doublechecking something before we proceed:

Dell Inc. Dell DV051

that's actually a System BIOS code rather than a model of Dell. based on the following document, i believe you have either a Dimension 3100 or Dimension E310:

How do I identify my system BIOS code when using a Driver ResourceCD on my Dell™ Dimension™ or Inspiron™ portable computer?

... could you please confirm that for me?

okay, i had a look at your downloads page and there's a few potentially-burning-problem-related issues i can see there:

Dimension 3100/E310 (XP)

check to make sure your Dell Dimension System BIOS and your Intel Chipset Driver are up to date.

it looks like you might be a couple of firmware updates behind on your HL-DT-ST DVD+-RW GWA4164B (Dell identifies it as an HLDS). one of those was an urgent update described as "Firmware update improving writes/reads to certain marginal CD-R, DVD-R and DVD+R discs", so definitely make sure you're up to date on that one.

on the Video driver side of things, make sure your Intel(R) 82915G/GV/910GL Express Chipset Family driver is up to date.

(actually, if there's anything else there relevant to your particular E310 configuration, now would be a good time to stock up.)

once you're satisfied that you're fully updated there, try another burn. any better performance this time?

I did everything as instructed and burner stopped working. I tried a system restore and it still did not burn. I restored back one day further and it still will not work. After doing some research on-line, I find that people having the same problems should try using "Nero" to burn. So I downloaded it and was finally able to burn a music cd. Dvd's play in the drive as do music cd's. However, I cannot get a data cd to burn. What would cause this to happen after doing a system restore? What did all those Dell updates change so that I can't burn? This machine is 13 months old and to say I'm upset over this is a major understatement.

I was using Sonic (paid application) for burning. Microsoft Windows Media also worked for burning. I received to error message on iTunes but when trying to burn from Windows as well as Sonic, I was prompted to "insert a recordable disc". That was it. It wouldn't accept a new one fresh from packaging, neither of the two I had, Verbatim or Phillips.

okay. if a bunch of different applications are having trouble with that drive, it's probably worth checking with your Dell support.

(thinking here that they have remote diagnostic packages that they can use to check your PC, and the technicians may therefore be able to get a bit more information on the nature of the problem than the error messages are giving us.)
