How to reduce piano's "default" reverb? (no reverb plugin used)

Hi Logic wizards,

Does anyone know how to reduce "default" reverb on piano. I am not using any reverb plugins and I already reduced piano's "default" release to minimum. There are moments when notes almost resonate. I reduced the volume but the resonance is still there. I am using Steinway piano from Garage Band. I like the way it sounds and I would not want to change it for another kind.

Is there a plugin that would to do the trick?

Thanks

Anya

I dont have garage band in front of me right now, but I believe GB instruments are based on Logic EXS instruments, which are created with samples of real instruments in a real space (in your example a Steinway piano). Thus the "resonance" you speak of is within the samples themselves, and cannot be changed via attack/release.

You could try using a noise gate and hope the reverb is soft enough to be filtered, but you will probably not be happy with the results. Worth a shot though.

Hi,

You can use the Logic "Enveloper" plugin, which allows you to reduce the sustain of the piano. You find it under the "dynamics" plugins.Experiment to se what settings sound good to you.

Or you can use the "Noise Gate" plugin, and set it so it turns off faster than the decay of the piano. You find that one also under the "dynamics" plugins.

Say the piano note lasts 2 seconds, you set the gate to open very fast, sustain about 500mS and to close before the 2 seconds, but slowly, emulating the natural piano sound.Adjust it to your liking.

Please refer to Logic's Plugin reference manual on both plugins for more details on how they operate, you'll find them very useful.

Of course, you have to be in Logic to use them...not Garageband...
