Alternative to FileMaker Pro?

I'm looking for an alternative application to FileMaker Pro. I just came into a new position (print production coordinator) and they use FMPro here, but the current database in place, well, *****. I've looked into other FMPro templates, but I don't think I want to stick with the program in the long-run. Any suggestions for another program to use?

Mac OS X (10.4.9)

You might want to provide more info on your requirements, since they can vary enormously, and some apps might be too limited or overkill depending on what they are.

I work in print production -- so any kind of creative databasing -- projects, vendors/contacts, the ability to view project schedules on a calendar, etc.
