30" and Radeon 9600xt ... will it or won't it work

I'm a little confused. I've asked three different times to the Apple tech. support and gotten 3 different answers to:
Will the 30" monitor I ordered work with my late 2004 AGP connector Radeon 9600XT video card?
I've received, no, yes and maybe... why don't you try it, but if not, here's a return authorization for you to return it.

And if it does, will it support a high resolution? or only something low?

THANKS! Robert

The ATI Radeon 9800 XT will not run a 30" display at full resolution. See:
<http://support.apple.com/specs/powermac/Power Mac_G5_Late2004.html>
"Graphics and displays
AGP 8X Pro graphics slot supporting up to 2 GBps data throughput, with one of the following graphics cards installed:
NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 Ultra with 64MB of DDR SDRAM, DVI and ADC ports
ATI Radeon 9600 XT with 128MB of DDR SDRAM, DVI and ADC ports
ATI Radeon 9800 XT with 256MB of DDR SDRAM, DVI and ADC ports (build-to-order option; occupies AGP slot and adjacent PCI slot)
NVIDIA GeForce 6800 GT DDL with 256MB GDDR3 SDRAM, two dual-link DVI ports (occupies AGP slot and adjacent PCI slot)
NVIDIA GeForce 6800 Ultra DDL with 256MB GDDR3 SDRAM, two dual-link DVI ports (build-to-order option; occupies AGP slot and adjacent PCI slot)
Built-in support for digital resolutions up to 1920 x 1200 pixels. The NVIDIA GeForce 6800 Ultra DDL or NVIDIA GeForce 6800 GT DDL graphics card is required to power the 2560 x 1600-pixel resolution of the 30-inch Apple Cinema HD Displays."

You need a graphics board with dual-link DVI to run the 30" at full resolution. The AGP cards Apple sold that have dual-link DVI ports are:
ATI Radeon 9650 XT (one single-link, one dual-link DVI)
NVIDIA GeForce 6800 GT DDL (two dual-link DVI)
NVIDIA GeForce 6800 Ultra DDL (two dual-link DVI)
Apple doesn't sell these as retail items, but might sell them as replacement parts, or you could look for them used. Be sure to get Mac versions.

There are two new graphics boards that will work:
ATI Radeon® X800 XT MAC Edition RoHS 256MB AGP (one ADC, one dual-link DVI)

ATI Radeon® 9600 Pro PC & MAC Edition RoHS 256MB AGP (one single-link, one dual-link DVI)

These cards mat be available at

Thanks,
That was a lot of GREAT info!
I'm still a tad confused. Apparently the 9600 pro supports dual link DVI. I thought the 9600xt was better than the 9600 pro?
http://ati.amd.com/products/radeon9600/radeon9600pro/compare.html
This comparison site shows it as faster. So shouldn't the xt work on the 30" at the higher resolution?
If not, you gave me a lot of Excellent sources to buy the cards I need.
Thank you!
Robert

That comparison table is for PC cards, which do not work in a Mac. Click "Specifications" at the left of the page:
"System Requirements
Intel® Pentium® 4/III/II/Celeron™, AMD® K6/Duron™/Athlon®/Athlon XP® or compatible with AGP 4X (1.5V), 8X (0.8v) or Universal AGP 3.0 bus configuration (4X/8X)."

The only Mac compatible 9600 to support dual-link DVI is the ATI Radeon® 9600 Pro PC & MAC Edition.

I'm actually running a brand new 30" HD Cinema Display I just plugged in yesterday. I'm waiting for my new Intel 2.66 box to come tonight and am currently running the 30" off of a Power Mac G5 with the ATI Radeon 9600 XT AGP and 128 MB's. I'm sure ( I also hope ) that the new box will make the display that much better! By the way, any clue on how to shrink the size of applications when they open. I love having more desktop however the apps are taking up all the extra room. I guess what I'm saying is that it would be great to have this much room with the same size apps as on my 23" HDCD's???
