I just bought an HP 4510 All-In-One printer. I used the Mac disc that came with it and ran the setup. After installing the software the HP Printer Setup Assistant window popped up. It said that it will gather information to set up the printer. I clicked 'Next'. The window says 'Select your HP device', only there is nothing there to select. 'Next' is subdued, so my only choice is 'Back'. I went to HP's support site and selected the option to chat with an online technician. It's been 'Connecting...' for about 20 minutes now.
The printer is connected via the USP to the AirPort Extreme. I am connected to the Internet through the AirPort Extreme now.
I've plugged the printer directly into the computer. I reran setup. This time I was able to slect the printer. I can print when the printer is connected directly to the computer, but not when the printer is connected to the AirPort.
I went to the troubleshooting page. Per the instructions I powered down the printer and unplugged the AirPort. Making sure the USB was connected, I plugged the AirPort back in. There were no OS updates to download. I looked at the firmware update, but it says I need AirPort Utility 5.1. I don't seem to have that; only AirPort Admin Utility. I checked the summary in AirPort Admin Utility, and the printer is listed as depicted on the screenshot. I tried printing a test page, but it didn't work.
Since my other printer (HP 3520) had the same problem (I bought a newer printer in the hope that it would work), and since I can print when connected directly to the computer, this looks like an AirPort problem.
Well, you don't need the Airport Utility 5.1 as that was released specifically for support of the new Airport Extreme 802.11n model.
So, again, use Printer Setup Utility and Browse for the printer that you know is connected to see if you can set it up that way. Another test: from any app, File menu -> Print -> Printer: Bonjour Printers and see if it appears there.
I went to Print|Bonjour Printers|HP Photosmart C4100 series from Safari. It tried to add the printer, but said an error occurred.
I went to System Preferences. HP Photosmart C4100 series is listed under Printer, and the box is checked under In Menu. When I go to Printer Setup Utility there is a largely blank window with an Apply Changes button. It has a drop-down menu that says Installable Options. When I click on the up/down arrows I can choose Name & Location or Printer Model. Printer Model has HP Photosmart C4100 series greyed out in a drop-down menu. (i.e., the printer or drop-down menu cannot be selected.) The Model Name window is empty. Name & Location has the printer name (which I can change) and location (which is the name of my computer.
There doesn't appear to be anything to do in Printer Setup Utility.
The manual says 2006, so it's not 'new' new. I didn't see the 4150 on the 'will not work' list. (The 4110 is on the 'will work' list.)
The frustrating is that as a fairly recent convert to Macs, I tell people how easy they are and how they 'always work'. This has been the case until I went wireless last month.
