Folder turned into a 'Unix Executable File'

HELP!

I have a folder that has turned itself into a 'Unix Executable File', with the same filename. While the old folder was about 10gb, the new folder is 0kb.

Has the folder 'forgotten' it is a folder? Can this be fixed?

Cheers,

Macbook Pro, Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Moving the files from a Windows box to the Mac via a windows formatted flash drive can cause this problem, but it wouldn't cause it on files created on the Mac and that have never been near a Windows box..

What sort of files are they? What format? What file suffix should they have?

Do any of the files have a / in their names?

Regards

TD

They're Word files, should have had the .doc suffix. And no, none have the slash in the names. I forget why, but I know that that's a huge no-no...something about pathnames?

Anyway, they're all Word files, I don't think any had the suffix originally. Since I had this prob originally, I have always made sure that I include suffixes on all files of any type, and I've taught my wife to do the same. Still, I'm stuck with these files.

I could convert them one-by-one using MacLinksPlus, and that's my fallback position here, but I'm hoping I can do a quick batch change...

Right...some of the files in Documents are of course not Word files, but the ones that are messed up are all Word files. But renaming won't work. I have the AppleScript that renames, but the same problem exists.

Also, changing the extension alone won't help. It gives the file a Word icon, but it still opens with all kinds of weird stuff.

In the original post from last year, you made reference to a second set of Terminal commands that would help if errors came about. Would that second set of commands apply here?

Yes, but reviewing the previous thread would require, um, what's that word again? READING?????

Sorry for the carelessness there, and many, many thanks for the pointers that you've given.

A shout out to Scott Radloff, if you're still on these boards, do you know if the situation is hopeless?

Terence, and all others, thanks for your help to this point! From these boards to Macnn, MacLife/MacAddict, to MacWorld, I've found so many Mac users to be remarkably willing and able to help others. It really is terrific.
