ExpressCard/34 Slot?

What is the point of this thing, I have searched to see what fits in there or what that slot will do and found basically nothing. Can anyone tell me what it can be used for?

Unless there is a memory card in it at the time you can plug it in or pull it out pretty much as often as you want since it won't even register. PC Cards were the same way. Once a memory card is in and mounted, unmount it first.

I kept a PC card SD reader in the PC slot all the time so I wouldn't forget it. Does this card go in all the way so you won't break it off?

actually now that I think about it, I wish laptops had GPS built in.. in fact, even mobile phones would be so compelling if they had GPS.

but as for the express card slot.. sure, there aren't that many cards available for it, but some of the ones already available are really very useful for certain uses. being able to add eSATA or an additional FW800 buss is of very high value to audio professionals (and I'm sure many other pros) seeing as once you start adding a lot of the necessary firewire devices, you can really run out of bandwidh and performance suffers. being able to use an external SATA drive while leaving the built in FW buss free for an audio interface is a very welcome thing, sometimes even a crucial thing, for pro audio users. also I can imagine it would be a big plus to video editors too, especially if they want to use the built in firewire for a video output to TV... having the video data on a very fast external SATA drive in that case, makes the whole setup much more powerful.

and as regards card readers for digital camera cards... I don't get why people want to use these things. I suppose there must be some formats where you don't have a choice. but for me, I bought a san disk ultra II card which is fantastic. it has a panel that flips over and clicks into place meaning you can both connect it directly to the camera, and also then take it out, flip the panel over, and it turns into a USB 2.0 key, all in the one device.. you plug it straight into USB and that's all there is to it. works great and means I don't ever have to connect my camera to the computer with a cable, nor buy a card reader adapter or card reader express card. it's great value for money and such a well thought out idea in terms of maximum convenience.
