how can i run AirPort Express for both a Mac and Windows 2000 SP2?
I have my AirPort Express set up for my iMac and it runs fine. We have a house guest who has a laptop running Windows 2000 SP2. Can I set up Airport so that both computers can access internet wirelessly?
20" iMac Dual Core,
Mac OS X (10.4.9),
1G 4GB iPod nano
As long as your house guest's PC has 802.11b/g-compliant wireless capability, it should be able to connect to your AirPort Express Base Station (AX). Are you currently running wireless encryption (WEP or WPA/WPA2) on the AX? For WPA/WPA2, the PC's wireless would have to support this as well to connect.
Let's start with can you tell the make/model of the PC? Does it use a insertable wireless PC card, USB device, or built-in? Is it fairly new, i.e., less than 3 years old?
The computer is an Averatec 5110HX, manufactured in 03. It has an Intel (R) PRO/Wireless LAN 2100 3B PCI adaptor & a Realtek RTL8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet NIC.
Hope this is the relevant info. My undetstanding is these were built in but I'm not sure.
Just did a quick check of the Unofficial Averatec Support Forum. Several posters there upgraded the driver for the wireless card to support WPA on the 5110.
They used drivers from other computer manufacturers and indicated that Averatec has not provided updated drivers.
They were running XP SP2.
Many Averatec models have weak wifi cards. Mine included. Sorry I am unable to be of more help.
