Run Old Games?

I have an old Diamonds CD ROM that was meant for System 6 or 7. Is there any way I can run it on my iMac? Any advice would be helpful.

iMac 24, Mac OS X (10.4.9)

If that is an Intel Mac, Classic is not supported.

There is an emulator called SheepShaver that can be installed, but it emulates the entire Mac OS without presuming there will be any help from the actual installed OS, so it is a bit daunting to make it work just to play an older game.

You can buy an older Mac for less than you paid for the game.

Hi there,

I just bought a new MacBook, but I have tons of kids software games that we used to run on our PC. The covers say they are compatible with Macintosh, and some say version 6, and version 7. I thought Macs were backwards compatible but I can't get any of these older software programs to run. I don't know where to get an older Mac, or how to make these ones work.

Can anyone tell me what kind of used Mac I would need to find? I'm not aware of the names of older Mac computers. My kids really like these old programs; Reader Rabbit, Mickey Mouse Kindergarten, etc.

Any advise would be appreciated, as I am so new to the world of Mac.

Hi JennSw ~

One of the best places to find info on older Macs is at Low End Mac.

You can find used Mac dealers there on this page:
http://lowendmac.com/dealers/index.shtml

.. and check out the list of the best older Macs to look for here:
http://lowendmac.com/best/index.shtml

Low End Mac has all the info on upgrading each Mac, mailing lists for each Mac, links to old software, etc. It's one of the best resources for old Macs.

You might also just want to do a search in Google (or what ever search engine you use) to find refurbished Macs in your area.

The new Macs running System 10/OS X are using system software based on Unix now which is a different architecture than earlier systems (9 and below) so the old games sometimes do not run well or at all on the new Macs.

Your welcome Jenn 🙂

One other place that may be promising for finding old Macs and parts:

http://www.recycledgoods.com

I was trying to find an old Apple monitor for my Powermac 8500 today and even on eBay, I didn't see too many of the much older Macs offered on there. Mostly G3's and G4's running System 9, although they would probably run the old games just fine too.

Happy hunting!
