Mastering Question: The Best Limiter: Final Limitation:

this is probably a stupid question but I though I ask anyway.

when your final mix is done and you want to bring everything up to the light "just before the red' which plugin is best for this?

After playing around with all of logics limiters I am yet to find one that does exactly this without hurting sound quality.

anyone?

G5, Mac OS X (10.4)

Well, for your own mixes, bounce down to 24bit - WITHOUT a limiter ! Don't worry about volume, worry about a great mix.
If you use compression on your stereo bus, fine. If it sounds good...if not, great !That's the one to send to mastering, if you're doing that. The real mastering guys..well...um, they'll use compression, limiting and in some cases ( don't say I told ya ) A/D clipping to get those insanely loud masters.

For listening copies, or if you have to self master on your DAW for your client, A&R, whatever - reimport the nice uncrushed 24 bit mix and use the waves L2, L3 ( more transparent IMHO ), or... the roger nichols one.

And the winner is...

SONY OXFORD LIMITER

It won't make song better if the mix itself isn't good enough,
but
it is the best Limiter available in AU format, period 😉

All Limiters are adding artefacts, distorting signal etc. when you want to push the overall volume up. The question is "when?" and "how much?".

Personally I never liked Logic's Adaptive Limiter. To me it seems that it flats the program completly - makes it 2D instead of keeping 3D.

Waves L2 & L3. Hmmmm, yes, better, but not much. Not THAAAAAAT much :))

Than UAD-1 Mastering (Precision) Limiter.
Now THIS is REALLY better! To my ears more transparent and invisible than Waves stuff.

Also TC Electronics have Limiter plugin for their Powercore systems.

But Sonnox Limiter is another league.
