External Firewire drive icon changed

Without warning, the typical Firewire drive icon I've grown accustomed to changed on me. It used to be this:

But now, every time I plug in my drive, its this strange thing:

This second image looks like a compact flash card or something, so I'm thinking OS X is confused and thinks my Firewire drive is now a compact flash drive? How can I make it stop? Is there any way to revert to the normal icon? (I've tried the article in Apple's knowledge base about removing custom icons, and so I know its not a custom icon that's somehow been applied to my drive).

 MacBook Pro 15.4", Mac OS X (10.4.9)

I don't know if this would help you or not, but I once had a similar experience where the image of my external La Cie drive started out looking like an image of the drive and changed to the orange icon like yours--and I don't remember the circumstances. But I was able to go to the La Cie site and change it back. Possibly you could do something similar on the manufacturer's site of your external hard drive.

Use your favourite gizmo (get AppleJack if you don't have one) to do what's called a "deep clean" of your caches, i.e. one which includes the LaunchServices caches. (After a re-boot you will be asked to confirm use of 3rd party apps that you launch by dbl-clicking on a document. That's a security measure, and you will only be asked once.)

Was it really without warning, or did it begin immediately after installing the 10.4.9 update? This may be unrelated to your problem, but there seem to be some ongoing issues with Macally FW enclosures after the update, including incorrect icons in some cases. E.g. see this thread:

Yes, this is exactly it. I have a Macally enclosure. I guess I'll try booting to single user mode and running a fsck, as that appears to have been the "fix."
