undo 'empty trash'

Oh, but if I could take back one key stroke! Long story, short: I trashed 4 extensions that I need that were in the trash with other stuff. Is there a utility that would allow me to find and retrieve these? I've not used the computer since I made this stupid mistake realizing I may further compromise such a retrieval. The computer does boot and is operable.

I take it from your comments that you do back things up on your computer. Backup is a good thing.

If you want to retrieve lost files Data Rescue II from Prosoft might be able to help you. You will need a second disk for it to place the files. You can download a demo copy of the software which will tell you what can be recovered. If it is able to recover the files then you must pay for a license to actually recover the files.

I know this is going to date myself but my absolute all time favorite strip was Pogo with Calvin & Hobbes bringing up a close second. One of the things I liked about Pogo was that when I started read it I was still to young to get all the political comments that were in it. Later I got a bit older I discovered that aspect of it. Since then I have actually gone back and to read it again. I was amazed by all of the stuff I got out it the second time around.

Welcome, Bob Nary. Allan is right, Data Rescue is very good, but a good backup is even better.
And Bloom County was the best comic strip ever. You can look it up!

There isn't a secure delete for individual files that have already been deleted, but you can use Disk Utility to securely erase the empty space on a volume (which includes previously deleted items).

Using Applications>Utilities I did not see a selection for erasing only empty space where "deleted" files reside. I have 10.3.9. Can someone guide me through this process? I don't want to accidentally delete anything, like the entire hard drive (volume)!

Wrong OS - you're running 10.3.9.
Besides, you can't delete the boot volume by accident.

Are you saying that disk utility erase function as described previously is not available on 10.3.9? If so, what OS does it come with?

I didn't mean "delete the volume" so much as delete the files on the hard drive.
