We're making some security improvements to your AT&T Yahoo! service. These changes will affect members who send or receive email from a desktop or mobile client program, such as Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Outlook Express, Eudora, Apple Mail, or Thunderbird. 

. Open your email client program.
. Locate the email account settings for your particular client.
. Change the POP server to pop.att.yahoo.com.
. Change the SMTP server to smtp.att.yahoo.com.
. Check the option labeled Use an encrypted connection (SSL) and change the SMTP port to 465.
. Check the option labeled Use an encrypted connection (SSL) and change the POP3 port to 995.
. Confirm the above settings then click OK.

Can anybody tell me if this is necessary to make apple mail work?

I contacted ATT for some Mac Mail specific instructions on how to do this. They sent me the following which does seem to work. Note that they do not mention the 'Description' field under the Account Information window. This needs to be the full e-mail address as it did before.

1. Launch your Mac Mail program.
2. Click on the [Mail] menu and select [Preferences].
3. Click on the [Accounts] tab.
4. Select your AT&T Yahoo! Mail account and double-check on the following settings.

a. Email Address: username@sbcglobal.net
b. Incoming Mail Server: pop.att.yahoo.com
c. Username: username@sbcglobal.net
d. Password: password for your AT&T Yahoo! Mail account.

5. Click on the [Server Settings] button.
6. [Outgoing Mail Server] should be set to [smtp.att.yahoo.com].
7. Select the [Use Secured Socket Layer (SSL)] check box and set the [Server Port] from 25 to [465].

Note: When updating the secure server settings, check SSL checkbox first, then update the port number setting or the data will revert back to the defaults.

8. Set the [Authentication] field to [PASSWORD].
9. Type in your complete e-mail address and password in their respective fields.
10. Click on the [OK] button.
11. Click on the [Advanced] tab.
12. Please uncheck the [Remove copy from server after retrieving a message] checkbox.
13. Please check the [Use SSL] box.
14. Set the port number from 110 to [995].
15. Set the [Authentication] box to [Password].
16. Close your [Accounts] window and click on [Save Changes if prompted].
17. Try to send an e-mail message to yourself and check if you are able to receive it.

I am pondering the same question my self. I am wondering if this applies only to those who have an smtp.sbcglobal.att.com rather than smtp.sbcglobal.yahoo.com? They also have one port to reconfigure I do not think I have? I am thinking I may wait to see if my email stops working and then make the changes as there would have to be a specific change over date (I think). If we were to do this today I would think our email would stop working for us. I checked out the "Make The Changes Automatically" and that does not work on a Mac. Our only option would be to make the changes manually. I have one port (currently 25 selected) and can select the "Use Secure Socket Layer SSL"box to check. I am not sure about the POP 3 Port they talk about changing. I cannot even find it.

I just talked to ATT and it took me about 3 minutes to make the changes and it all works fine. After August you will have to make the changes or you will not receive or send any mail.

Use the alternate method sent to you by ATT on your email. All is self expanatory until you get to item number (6). You will have to go to the Advance settings where you will enter 995 in the port box and check SSL. Send yourself a test message and you should be in business.

Powerbook G-4 1.67 running 10.4.9 using Apple Mail.

I jumped the gun a bit. I am sending and receiving all my mail fine on both of my computers. I followed the ATT Instructions I received in the mail for Apple Mail. On one of my computers I do have a minor problem. When I first create a new message I get a window indicating "Unable to verify SSL Server pop.sbcglobal.yahoo.com". I press the "continue" button and for the rest of the session I can continue to send messages without the window appearing.

I took the Certificate on this window and dragged it to the desktop and then to my Keychain where these are stored. It want let me intall it there indicating one is already there??? Someone got an idea??

I talked to AT&T on the phone. You can continue with your current settings until August at which time you will have to convert to their secure server or you will be out of the mail business.

I converted over two days ago using Apple Mail and all went well with one of my computers (G4 Powerbook running 10.4.6). No problems.

On my G5 Desktop 1.6 also running 10.4.6 I can send and receive mail but when I first open Mail I get a message the server has a problem with my Certificate. The message said the server could be a phony and my message would not be secure. I then just press the button "Continue" and mail is good to go for the rest of the session. The certificate that apparently is bad is shown on the warning that comes up on the screen. I tried dragging it into the keychain certificate folder but since it is not an original it will not work and I also got a message that the certificate already exist there. I looked at it and it is not gold trimmed (it is blue) which means it is not an original.

Tonight I am going to copy the entire Keychain from the computer that has no problems from a USB Drive to the computer that keeps showing the warning message to see if that works. Both computers have basically all the same information so hopefully I will have some luck. If it does not work I have a backup of my entire drive and also just backed up the Keychain in case this creates problems.

Strange that one computer worked just fine right off the bat and the other has a small problem? Could be I am going through my office server in the office and at home using Airport Extreme with a DSL.

Wrong.

The selection under the Advanced tab for the account preferences is for the INCOMING mail server ONLY.

The following was copied from one of your previous posts in this thread:

You will have to go to the Advance settings where you will enter 995 in the port box and check SSL.

You don't have to enter anything in the Port box and then check SSL. Selecting Use SSL automatically changes the incoming mail server port from 110 to 995 for a POP account.

Again - all settings under the Advanced tab for account preferences are for the incoming mail server ONLY.

The outgoing mail server settings are located under the Account Information tab for the account preferences. You select the Server Settings button under the SMTP server selection to change SMTP server or OUTGOING server settings ONLY.

Alan: You are correct I and I am wrong. My mistake was calling AT&T and having the girl walk me through the setup. I had discarded the original instructions thinking it was SPAM. When she gave me verbal instructions she did not tell me to change the name of the Incoming Server so I ended up with a problem. I could send and receive mail but kept getting a message about a server.

My system is working fine now on both computers. The change, if you follow the simple directions will take less than two minutes and you should have no problems if your are using Apple Mail. In the military we had an old expression when taking a test: "RTFQ". This sort of applies to me on this situation.

thank you. While the information you gave was specific for att the information was similar. I called bellsouth again and they walked me through it for their settings, I had to delete my pop mail accounts and create a new one with them. then it worked. the article was helpful because I has some specific questions to ask and they responded with their correct information. thank you

I have followed the instructions in this discussion with mixed results.
Mail on my G5 works without a hitch, both mac mail & sbcglobal.
My iBook (same OS) will not send mail but will receive mail.
All settings are the same.
The only difference I see between the 2 computers is the PASSWORD dots stay visible on the accounts for the computer that will send mail, and it is always gone on the other computer after I do a save.
Anyone know why one will keep password and the other will not?
