Although I don't have sbcglobal/att service, the first thing I would do is first verify if there has been a change in the server host names as compared to what is currently in Mail's preferences' settings for this account. If there has been no change in the server host names from what is currently in your Apple Mail preferences, then that is good. What they are doing is finally encrypting your login and password when it goes across the 'net, because if SSL is not checked, and you are using ports 110 (pop) and 25 (smtp), your login/password information is being sent in the clear. So then it's a no-brainer. Change it.

On the other hand, if the pop and smtp server names have changed from what you have specified in Mail's Preferences now for this account, I would verify that the 1-800 phone number given in that email really belongs to sbcglobal/att, then call them and verify that they did indeed send this email to you. If they did, the same comments about port changes and SSL apply (so your login and password information is no longer sent in the clear). It's a no-brainer. Change it.

Lastly, at some point in time, assuming this to be a valid email, your old settings wouldn't work anymore and you'll have to change it.

I had the same thing happen on my sbcglobal email account, but as I was still recieving email I choose to create a new account to verify that it worked properly. I started recieving duplicate emails from the past month or so and decided that the mail was working properly. I think I made a mistake when I deleted the original email account as all the emails associated with the original account are gone. Is there any way to recover the emails that were in the inbox?

I got this same email from ATT and change my settings accordingly. Then I could not send email from this account.

After talking on the phone with the ATT service technician, I determined that the problem was in the Account Information Description field. I put ATT Yahoo into that field, and it now needs to be your email address, the same as the next line of Email Address.

I changed that one item, and now everything works again.

Hello Jim.

What is required to check an account's incoming mail server for new messages is the incoming mail server address, the account's user name - which is usually the portion of your email address in front of the @ sign only but with some providers it is the entire email address and the account's password.

For the outgoing or SMTP server is the SMTP server address and the require server port for the SMTP server unless the SMTP server is authenticated separately by the account's user name and password.

The account's description entered in the Description field under the Account Information tab for the account preferences or your chosen name for the account has no bearing on receiving or sending messages.

I am having similar issues with sbcglobal/AT&T and mail.

I've made these changes to my server settings. One of the items I noticed on the ATT Mail FAQ was that they instruct you to set up your email client WITHOUT password authentication for the POP server....I can't see how to do this in Mail; Mail only provides a pull-down list of several authentication methods, none of which seem to work be acceptable to AT&T's server settings.

Any suggestions?

For the incoming or outgoing mail server?

This can't be for the incoming mail server and if authentication isn't required and supported for the outgoing or SMTP server, you select None for the authentication which is available under the Account Information tab for the account preferences. Select the Server Settings button below for the selected SMTP server.

Thanks Allan. Here's what they say ( http://helpme.att.net/article.php?item=315) for Outlook/Outlook Express/Eudora/Netscape. (They don't have instructions for Mail, so I'm interpreting somewhat for the Mail settings.)

"1. On the Servers tab, ensure that you have NOT checked Log on Using Secure Password Authentication in the Incoming Mail Server section.
2. Check that POP3 is listed in the Incoming Mail Server field.
3. On the Advanced tab, ensure that you have selected This Server Requires a Secure Connection (SSL) under the Incoming (POP3) and Outgoing (SMTP) Port settings.

The Outgoing mail (SMTP) should be set to port 465 and the Incoming mail (POP3) should be set to port 995."

I've tried making changes within Mail>Preferences>Accounts>Advanced (for incoming/POP server) and Mail>Preferences>Accounts>Account Information>Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP)>Server Settings for outgoing.

I can send mail but can't receive it. I've also sent an inquiry to AT&T's customer service but haven't yet heard anything back.
