Same price for refurbished PowerBook G4 15'' and MacBook Pro 15 Core Duo

I am a recent switcher to a Mac (boy, am I sorry for not listening to a Mac fanatic coworker years ago) who is now also discovering the pleasure of finding out how a computer actually works (mostly thanks to this discussion forum).

I am looking at getting another Mac for my wife. This would be a refurbished one from Apple.

I noticed something that I cannot explain (neither could a sales guy at the local Apple Store): a several years old refurbished PowerBook 15-inch 1.67GHz SuperDrive with ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 (64 MB DDR) has today on Apple's web site the same price (1299) as a refurbished MacBook Pro, 15-inch, 1.83GHz Intel Core Duo with ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 with 128MB GDDR3 memory. Similarly, today a refurbished PowerBook G4 15-inch 1.67GHz SuperDrive with ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 (128MB DDR) is the same price (1349) as a refurbished MacBook Pro, 15-inch, 2.0GHz Intel Core Duo with ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 with 128MB GDDR3 memory. All the above units have 512 MB RAM and a 80GB HD.

I presume Apple would not post these prices if they are unable to sell the PowerBooks for these amounts.

How come an older generation of computer costs refurbished the same as a newer one that is also refurbished? Were the PowerBooks that much better, and if yes, why? Or are the first generation MacBook Pros problematic, and if yes, why? Or are there other reasons for this equal price of older units?

Hello tutlek and welcome to the Mac and to the forum! I, also, am intrigued by these prices. Don't know Apple's reasoning for them, though. Regardless of your choice, BUY Apple Care and increase the RAM. Are you presently a member of the MacBook Pro forum? Both of these laptops have their problems, which will become evident as you get emails posing questions.

so the prices are the same, but the macbooks are fastser?? what gives on the price??

this is my take on it. the powerbooks are still running PowerPC . the macbooks are running Intel. so with the new Intel chips, the OS is in Universal Binary. so, basically the answer is " usability."

some programs will not run correctly with universal binary, so there is still a need for Power PC machines. Eventually, software manufacturers will catch up to apple and everything will work again, but for the time being, a lot of companies are still playing catchup. for those users who need to use software that will not run on universal binary, they are required to still run PowerPC chips.

I guess this software issue might be one good reason for the youngest PowerBooks to still have value comparable to the oldest MacBook Pros.

Anyway, seems to me that as a newer Mac user with no old software to run that requires a PowerPC, I am probably better off sticking to refurbished Intel Macs, since they seem to have more features for the same price.

The plus is that you and your wife will have basically the same product. Did you purchase Apple Care? Highly recommended by me. If I had it, it would have saved me a small fortune. This is a PowerBook forum so I'm not familiar with the problems with, or the utilities on the MacBook. So may I offer a few suggestions: if it is the same, it is imperative that you run disk utility, to verify and repair permissions and verify and repair disk, as well as the Apple Hardware Test, from your system disk, on a fairly consistent basis. A good third party application is Disk Warrior to keep your hard drive working optimally. Also, keep as much disk space as possible unused, 10% minimum, if not more. And back-up, back-up, back-up your hard drive. All the best!
