Same price for refurbished PowerBook G4 15'' and MacBook Pro 15 Core Duo
I am looking at getting another Mac for my wife. This would be a refurbished one from Apple.
I noticed something that I cannot explain (neither could a sales guy at the local Apple Store): a several years old refurbished PowerBook 15-inch 1.67GHz SuperDrive with ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 (64 MB DDR) has today on Apple's web site the same price (1299) as a refurbished MacBook Pro, 15-inch, 1.83GHz Intel Core Duo with ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 with 128MB GDDR3 memory. Similarly, today a refurbished PowerBook G4 15-inch 1.67GHz SuperDrive with ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 (128MB DDR) is the same price (1349) as a refurbished MacBook Pro, 15-inch, 2.0GHz Intel Core Duo with ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 with 128MB GDDR3 memory. All the above units have 512 MB RAM and a 80GB HD.
I presume Apple would not post these prices if they are unable to sell the PowerBooks for these amounts.
How come an older generation of computer costs refurbished the same as a newer one that is also refurbished? Were the PowerBooks that much better, and if yes, why? Or are the first generation MacBook Pros problematic, and if yes, why? Or are there other reasons for this equal price of older units?
