Connecting a Mac to an NT4 Domain

Hi all,

Is there any way I can connect a Mac to an NT4 domain? I've got the Mac connected to the network switch and can see the Internet through tht Router so that part is set up OK.

I've noticed on the NT Server that there is a Services for Macintosh service listed in the Network dialog box in Control Pabel, if I install this will it create an area on the hard disk that the Mac can see?

Once this is set up will the Mac see the other computers like the PCs do in Network Neighbourhood and be able to use their resources such as printers, hard disks, zip drives etc?

Any help with this would be appreciated.

File Services for Macintosh will allow you to share a folder on your server as a Mac "volume", which is similar to a Windows "share". This will only affect the server and no other Windows machines on your network.

If you have AppleTalk capable printers then you can turn on AppleTalk to allow the Macs to print to them.

As for sharing Zip disks, using File Services for Macintosh may be possible but this is bad practice. You would have to share and unshare the disk each time just to change it. Just copy the files to the Mac volume that you've created.

I would recommend that you move away from Windows NT as soon as possible. It's no longer supported by Microsoft and is incompatible with current versions of Mac OS X. The AFP protocol built into Windows NT may even be too old to work at all with Mac OS X 10.4. If it does work then performance will be sluggish because you can only use the AppleTalk protocol (no IP connections) and your file names will be limited to 31 characters instead of 255.

Alternatively, you may be able to get by with a product called Dave from <http://www.thursby.com>. It will use your Windows NT Server's Windows file sharing instead of File Services for Macintosh. You can download a trial from Thursby's website to evaluate it for yourself.
