Canon MV800i won't show in iMovie

hi
i have a Canon MV800i and up until now it has been working seamlessly with iMovie. But now that I have updated to Mac OSX 10.4.6 it has stopped working. My other computer (iMac) has not had an upgrade and the camera won't work with it either.
The camera also doesn's show up in the System Profiler.
I have tried everything that I can think of to fix it, ie, bought a new fire wire cable, restarted everything many times, rang apple and canon, but nothing has improved.
When I plug in my camera to the computers (iBook and iMac), the camera says DV in, which is really confusing because the camera is picking up the connection but not the computer????

Please HELP!!!!

iBook and iMac, Mac OS X (10.4.9), iBook and iMac

Hi Howard

a. Camera set to Play ?

b. In the Camera menu - DV-out ? (some Cameras has to be set, and goes back
when not used for a while)

c. Does it work on another Mac ?

d. If so. I use Mac OS X.4.9 + QuickTime 7.1.5 + iMovie 6.0.3 - Do You ?

e. I would also try:
- trash -iMovie pref file (or ever rather start a new account and log into this)
will create lot's of new error free pref files.

- Run: repair permissions (Apple Disk Util tool)

- Run: repair hard disk (Apple Disk Util tool) (You need to start from CD or ext hd)

- leave Your Mac on during a night: automated cleaning up about 01:00 - 03:00
or run MacJanitor and Mac Sweeper (Google them)

- after this - unplug the mains for 30 min. really - cord out. This will reset some
ports eg. FW-port. (probably not Your problem but anyhow I include it)

Some Canon Cameras are trouble some. Most often one should not Daisy
Chain Camera <-> external hard disk <-> Mac
BUT in some cases this is the way to get it work so if You can try it.

(If You have an external hard disk - IT HAS TO be Mac Extended formatted)

Your internal hard disk should have minimum 15Gb free space.

hey Bengt
thanx for all the tips and ideas.
I am running OSX 4.9 i think and my quicktime is 7.1.5 aswell. I have run permission repairs and deleated the pref files many times. i will create another account though and give that a go. I have actually found that usefull with other problems i have had. I will also run through the other suggestions that you have sent.
I'm not really sure what you mean by a Daisy Chain thing. I'm not really up with all the computer jargon.
thankx again!!!

Daisy chain means you connect a device such as a Hard drive to the computer's Firewire port and then connect the camcorder to the 2nd Firewire port on the device. The camcorder is not directly connected to the computer - its connected through the other Firewire device.

If I don't make sense, try Wikipedia's explanation: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daisy_chain
