Long form FCP export to XDCAM failing

We cannot export long form projects (5min and longer) from Final Cut Pro Studio to any of our XDCAM decks. We are currently working in 35mbs at 60i.

We have successfully exported projects up to 5 minutes long. Anything longer, the export aborts and gives us an error message saying that the export failed…check to see that settings are correct.

Because of the successful short exports it would appear that either FCP or the XDCAM deck is trying to create a buffer of the project upon export.

If that is the case where would that buffer be created and what would be the weak link or setting causing the failure?

Here are some stats on our computer and software.

Power Mac G5, 2.5 GHz, 8 GB
Sonnet Tempo SATA X4P
3TB external raid, Sonnet Fusion 500P enclosure
ATI Radeon 9600 AGP 128MB

Mac OS X 10.4.8
Final Cut Pro 5.1.4
XDCAM Transfer 1.1
None of our XDCAM decks have had a firmware upgrade yet.

The only weak link I see above is the video card. The best card we can upgrade to is the ATI
Radeon X800 XT Mac Edition 256mb. It would be nice to figure out the problem before we purchase new video cards.

Any help would be appreciated.

Tim

Tim I have never transferred to xdcam using the file transfer method, I use my Kona2 card and HD/SDI with 422 machine control to edit to XDCamHD So the only hope I can give you is that the Kona edit to tape works in XDCam. Last piece was 20 min short feature, no problems.

Well the drop from desktop to the Clip folder just failed. The progress bar was just shy of completion. I got the same error as above with the new file name being the only difference.
"The finder cannot complete the operation because some data in 'C0001.MXF' could not be read or written (error code -35)."

The noise you are hearing is my head banging against the wall.

I appreciate all of your help...lunch is sounding good right now...be back in an hour.

A couple more ideas for why this could be happening:

* Is your XDCAM disc full, or nearly so?

You said the exported MXF file was 6.9GB. Since an XDCAM disc has some reserved space (for clip information like titles, comments, essence marks and so on), you'll need Finder to be saying that there's at least ~7.5 GB free on the XDCAM disc for the copy (or the FCP > Export XDCAM plug-in) to work.

* Just 1 or 2 of the video frames could be slightly corrupt near the point that XDCAM rejects the file.

FCP provides a "Recompress all frames" checkbox in the export plug-in to get around this. Since this can make the whole export operation pretty slow, you could test this theory by exporting just the part around where it fails (you said about 30%, so e.g. try from 20-40% thru your sequence). If that also fails, check "Recompress all frames" and try again.

Sorry about the delay in responding. I just got back from assignment.

All of the disks I have worked with are empty. I have tried exporting to a disk that had some short spots on it and the export still failed.

I tried the recompress all frames on my last day at work and one of my other editors checked it later and it also failed on export.

Turns out my engineer still has not upgraded my firmware so I am off to bend his ear.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I will post any new results.

My engineer still did not have time to update the firmware on the XDCAM deck. I decided to do it myself this morning.

After the update I could not export the sequence. It kept giving me the stereo warning. I have the sequence set to mono. Don't know why it is having this problem now. I am probably missing an idiot switch. I will reread all of your suggestions again. I am sure I can fix this later.

I did select all the clips on the timeline and tried an export that way. It successfully exported! I have to get to a HD set so I can watch the playback to see if there are any problems, but for now I can export.

It appears that the one thing out of my control, the firmware, was the problem.

I really appreciate everyone's help.

Just an update in case anyone has export problems with XDCAM and they find this thread.

When exporting make sure that nothing is selected except for your sequence in the Browser window. If you have even a clip selected in a closed bin, when you export, only that clip will export. If you have several bins and they have clips that are selected (highlighted) XDCAM will select the next clip when you try to export again.

So check all of your bins and make sure that nothing is selected except the sequence you want to export.

Again thanks to everyone who helped me with this problem.
