Problem Connecting to Network?

Hi there,

I have just set up my Apple TV...sort of. It loads the network list, and I can see my wireless network there, but when I click it, it says "There was a problem connecting to the network." And then I'm stuck in an endless loop of trying to connect and failing.

I have a Dell PC running Windows Vista, and I'm wondering if this could be part of the problem? My network is discoverable but password protected.

Hope you guys have some suggestions!

On this one, when I try to select my network from the list, I get the message "There was a problem connecting to the network. There was a problem with your network connection. Check your settings and try again (-6)." I don't even get an option to enter my WEP key (and I did set one now). Moving the router to connect it by Ethernet will be a pain in the butt, so I'm not thrilled to try it. My wireless settings say that the MAC Address Filtering is disabled and Mode is Mixed and 4x Support is Disabled (whatever all that means). My DHCP settings are enabled and show it to be a Private LAN, but that's about all I can find on that.

Regarding your network connection problem, try changing your wireless network setting in your router from Private LAN to Open Network and see if that works.

Regarding your iPod, it's not possible to connect it directly to your Apple TV.

iMac Mac OS X (10.4.9) The more I think, the more I think I shouldn't think more.

No, that didn't work either. And not being able to connect an iPod just doesn't make sense to me -- it seems as if it should be fully functional with the iPod. I think at this point, it's just not worth the trouble, time or expense, and that I'm going to send the Apple TV back. Maybe we'll try again when the bugs have been worked out. From what I can tell browsing the boards, I'm not the only one having issues with it.

Thanks for all the attempts to fix it -- I appreciate it!

I think you need to appreciate that it is quite unlikely that there is anything wrong with the unit, that this is almost certainly a user setting in your network set up or a router that doesn't implement multicast DNS properly. Even if Apple take it back you might want to resolve whatever your issue is, as even though your network is functional, it's clearly not working properly.

I don't think it's necessarily anything wrong with this specific unit, but EVERY OTHER add-on wireless equipment I have works -- this is the only item that doesn't. In addition, I think it's absolutely idiotic that they don't allow direct USB connectivity to the iPod -- the iPod spawned the Apple TV, not the other way around. Also, I am by far not the only one with a network connectivity issue with ATV, leading me to think it's the overall product that has a picky problem, not my router, which has allowed every other device it's come into contact with.

Within a year, the current ATV product will be obsolete, replaced with a newer, better version of the same thing that works the way it should work. It's this kind of reasoning that kept me from wasting $400 on the early 20GB music-only iPod, saving my $$ instead for the 60GB Video iPod.

Thanks again for your help -- I'm not bashing Apple. I love Apple, iTunes, my MacBook, and my iPod. But let's be realistic -- ATV is new and it's buggy. If it wasn't, this support board wouldn't be so busy.

The problem with that logic is it says every Apple device is buggy, since you will find busy support boards here for every one of them. It is the nature of a technical help forum to be heavily weighted with posts from people having any sort of problem -- relatively few people take the time to start a topic if they aren't having any problems.

Realistically, people reporting problems with this device represent a tiny fraction of its users. Most who resolve their issues discover their problems are not with the device itself but with related equipment, configuration errors, or corrupted or incompatible software.

This is not to say that your problem is caused by any of these things, only that the "busy board" argument is not a good reason to assume it is not.

Hi Gang.

This problem is linked to the file sharing / authentication issues between Vista and everything non Vista.

Firstly, ensure that Windows File Sharing is switched on via the System Preferences within OSX.

Onto Vista ->
1. Goto Start—>Run and open gpedit.msc or secpol.msc (Only for Windows Vista Ultimate/Business/Enterprise Versions)

Select Continue on the User Account Control prompt. This will launch the Group Policy Object Editor for the Local Computer Policy.

2. In the Group Policy Object Editor, expand:

-> Computer Configuration
-> Windows Settings
-> Security Settings
-> Local Policies
-> Security Options

3. Open the ‘Network security: LAN Manager authentication level’ policy and change the Security Setting to:

Send LM & NTLM - use NTLMv2 session security if negotiated

4. Click the OK button to save changes, and then close the Group Policy Object Editor.

Since Windows Vista Home Edition does not feature the Group Policy Editor, you may do the following to enable this feature:

1) Goto Start—>Run—> and type regedit

Select Continue on the User Account Control prompt.

2) Navigate to HKEY LOCALMACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Lsa

Create the following DWORD value (if it doesn’t exist):

LmCompatibilityLevel

And set its value to:1

Reboot ....
