Cleaning Smudges & Stains on Black MacBook Keyboard and Case: SOLVED

After sitting on the fence for a while regarding this issue, I decided to go out and purchase a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser and give it a shot based on some threads I had read.

IT WORKS! It did not damage my exterior case or the palm rests and removed all the stains and smudges that had accumulated over a year on the case. Although I had been using iKlear polish for the screen, it did little if anything to clean the fingerprints and smudges that were on the black polycarbonate case. Our BMB now looks as good as the day we bought it!

I know many out there will frown on this and say you should only use a microfiber cloth and water and believe me I did, but they did not work!

The Mr. Clean Magic Eraser is a very soft white sponge. You just wet it, squeeze it out and run it back and forth on the surface with light pressure. Then you blot it dry with a soft cloth and finish up using a microfiber polishing cloth. Just to be cautious, I started the battery. I figured that if it ruined the finish on the battery I could just buy a new battery, no huge loss. Within a minute the entire back of the MacBook was in virtually pristine out of box condition! It also cleaned off all of the shiny oily residue on the spacebar and the keyboard.

I heartily endorse this product if your BMB is smudged & stained in this manner. In my case, the unit is used by my daughter (a 9th grader) who, like many kids that age, likes to use AIM and iChat and eat snacks at the same time. You can just imagine what the case looked like after a year.

Anyway, my 2 cents.

Thanks valend! I know a number of people have recommended this... but I have always cautioned people about it as the MagicErase is a very mild abrasive. It's good to know that we can safely use this to clean our BlackBooks. I have to admit, Apple did a great job with the design of the MacBooks... but of all the black notebooks I've had over the years (and there have been many)... from cheap ones to high end ones, I've never experienced one with a finish like the BlackBook. It seems like it is actually slightly absorbent. On most surfaces, if you leave a finger print, you can use just about anything to just wipe it off. Granted, it's not a major thing... but I think my BlackBook would be darn near perfect if not for that annoying finish. I end up washing my hands just before I use my MacBook everytime to avoid getting marks on it. If my cat happens to pay me a visit and I pet him... it's back to washing my hands again.

Joey, thanks for your feedback. I was exceedingly cautious when I did this but is such a mild, mild abrasive (if you can even call it that) it was foolproof. Now I certainly would not recommend anyone doing this every week but 2 or 3 of times a year should be OK.

I had gotten the magic eraser about a year ago after my ibook had developed disgusting palm prints. A few wipes with it and it was gone! I also have the iKlear and it cleans the screen wonderfully but doesn't do much for the pad. I'm glad to hear it works on the black macbook as well... I was concidering getting one but wasn't sure how dirty it would get.

After about 8 months my black MacBook was getting really grungy looking. The local librarian saw it and mentioned that she'd been using the Mr Clean erasers on her whiteBook since she bought it. 8 months old and it looks like new. Sure, I'm not going to use it on the screen, but I don't hesitate to use it on my case and space bar.
