Did you actually mean to say "For incoming
mail i use mail.emich.edu..."
You do need to check with the IT guys. I can tell you
that at Univ of Colorado Denver campus, when on site,
you can use their mail server to send mail, but when
off-site, you have to use somebody else's smtp mail
server -- they block smtp relay from any machine that
does not have one of their IP addresses.
They may be using a different port, like 465 or 587,
undoubtedly require SSL with some sort of
authentication (if they don't require authentication
, then they probably are requiring an IP address
match). Have you just let the Mail account setup
Wizard time out on the smtp configuration page, and
just continue on, and edit the account manually in
Mail's Preferences after the fact?
