Did you actually mean to say "For incoming mail i use mail.emich.edu..."

You do need to check with the IT guys. I can tell you that at Univ of Colorado Denver campus, when on site, you can use their mail server to send mail, but when off-site, you have to use somebody else's smtp mail server -- they block smtp relay from any machine that does not have one of their IP addresses.

They may be using a different port, like 465 or 587, undoubtedly require SSL with some sort of authentication (if they don't require authentication , then they probably are requiring an IP address match). Have you just let the Mail account setup Wizard time out on the smtp configuration page, and just continue on, and edit the account manually in Mail's Preferences after the fact?

That depends on what your IT-staff decided to call their machines. There are several universities and companies in the world naming their servers like Denise, Agnes, Sandra and so on... you never know.

It would be the best to contact your universities IT-staff as this seems really an issue which can't be resolved without detailed knowledge of the universities IT infrastructure.

Pending you asking your school's IT department to provide you with the information you need to configure your Mail.app's preferences, did you try the same server name for inbound as outbound, i.e. mail.emich.edu? Does your IT department have a webpage that details this information? Try mail.emich.edu, SSL checked, password authentication, port 993, just to see what happens. Then when that doesn't work, call emich's IT dept to get the smtp server info.

Sounds like you have the inbound piece set up okay; for outbound, you need to know whether they are like **-Denver (no smtp allowed unless you are on their subnet) or not and (hopefully) if not, what is the smtp server host name, port number, does it use SSL, and type of authentication.
