Kingston KTA-MP667K2

Hi. I have question for someone with Kingston memory KTA-MP667K2/1G or KTA-MP667K2/2G. They seems to work correctly, but Temperature monitor from Bresink Software cant see temp sensor (Memory module not show up in list). I try it with five different KTA kits. Can someone try if its normal state with Kingston memory? System profiler shows memory status "OK". Thanks.

Hi Guys,

I emailed bresink and got the following reply from Marcel Breslink:

I have just installed 4 sticks of Kingston ram (KTA-MP667K2) into my MacPro and I don't get any temp readings for them.
I have Rescaned the sensors.
Do you think I should be getting readings?

Yes, you should. However, there seems to be a known technical problem
with the control processor built into Kingston FB-DIM modules. Although
Kingston sells the FB-DIMMs as being Mac-compatible, they seem to have
compatibility problems with the Mac Pro. The cooling control system in
the Mac Pro doesn't receive valid temperature readings from the modules.

Such issues are mentioned in the FAQ section of the Hardware Monitor
reference manual. In cases where customers had similar problems with
non-Kingston DIMMs, the vendors always found a defect in the modules
and the FB-DIMMs were replaced against correctly working ones.

For your convenience I have copied the section from the FAQ chapter below.

We also have feedback from other customers that these modules may
cause timing problems when being combined with non-Kingston modules
on the same riser card. This can cause memory corruption and Kernel Panics.

I hope this information is helpful to you. If I can be of further assistance,
please let me know.

Best regards,
Marcel Bresink

Q: Why are the temperature values for some of my FB-DIM modules in the Mac Pro or Xserve missing while others are displayed fine?

A: This indicates that you are using FB-DIMMs which are not fully compatible with Macintosh systems. In most cases this is caused by errors in the firmware of the AMB chip (Advanced Memory Buffer) controlling the module. You should replace these incompatible modules: If your system is not receiving valid temperature readings from the FB-DIMMs, the cooling control for the RAM temperature zone won't work correctly.

I have removed the ram and am trying to get a refund.

Hi Guys,

I got it contact with Kingston about this problem and they have been very helpfull.

Apparently only certain revisions of these chips work correctly in the MacPro, the incorrect revision chips do not supply temperature information.

Kingston have replaced my ram and now I see the temperatures displayed correctly.

Anyone with ram that doesn't display temperature should get in contact with Kingston to get a replacement.

Cheers

Andy
