Memory issue...

Recently my PB started giving me random kernel panics. So I figured it was probably a memory issue (The machine is about 2.5 years old). So I opened up the hatch for the memory and removed the top memory DIMM (it has 2 512s in it).

Then I attempted to fire it up and got the 3 beeps of death. So I put the top DIMM back in and it fired right up. I decided to check the other DIMM and I removed both DIMMs and installed the one from the lower slot into the upper slot (leaving the lower slot empty) and it fired right up.

This leads me to beleive that I have a dead/bad lower DIMM slot. I am guessing my options are now to have Apple replace the main PCB (a buttload of money to do that I suspect) or just toss the 2 512 DIMMS and install a single 1GB DIMM in the upper slot for about $120. I am leaning towards the latter plan here.

Is my approach sound?

When you have both sticks in, if you go to the system profiler (click blue apple, about this mac, more info, memory), if you have a lower memory slot failure, it may show as blank.

Your approach is sound, and if you can operate with 1GB memory, as you have been, that's the least cost solution. You may be able to sell the two 512MB memory to offset the 1GB cost.
